Got a new puppy!

Thanks everyone! He is super cute and such a fluff ball. We just gave him a bath and now he is so fluffy. Its funny that the hair on top of his head parts down the middle.:rotfl: He is doing great so far. Slept all night in the crate without crying or having an accident in the crate. Yay:cool1: He has done poop and pee outside. He follows us everywhere and always want to be near us. He is not wandering around too much yet. I hope he's the kind of dog that will stay with us in the yard without taking off. He is learning his name pretty quick too which is "Cookie". I'm hoping he doesn't bother my sons allergies....keeping our fingers crossed!

My only gripe about the dog thus far is the fact that poop gets stuck in his bum hairs..... Only bad part of a long hair dog.

Such a cute adorable little puppy. I have little dogs, too and I would definitely recommend crate training. Both of mine are crate trained and they don't seem to mind at all.

As for box training, my friend tried to box train her yorkie and it didn't work too well at all. I don't know if it was because she wasn't consistent or what, but it eventually just turned into a dog that wasn't house-trained AT ALL :(

Good luck with your new puppy, though. :)

I was never a fan of crate training mainly because we have generally had big dogs and a fenced in back yard so it was a no brainer. They went outside when we were not home. I also trained them to ring a bell when they wanted out. But then we got Butters, a miniature schnauzer. She is such a doll but crate training is the way to go at least for her. She is not to the point where she will get in the crate voluntarily but she does not complain when we put her in there. Trying to post a picture. We will see how it goes.

Crate training worked great for us. I used to put a fleece blanket around the sides and back so it was more like a den and he didn't feel like everyone was looking at him.;) He rather liked it.

We've had and now have another Sheltie. We've always crate trained ours. We feel that it gives them a place "of their own" to go to when they want. Many times we'll find them in the crate sleeping even though we didn't put them in there.

Puppies are so wonderful and fun. I am getting a puppy from our breeder's next litter, so am in puppy anticipation mode. Unfortunately, the mom is not in heat yet, so I still have more than 4-5 months to wait even if she was bred today.

YOU ARE GETTING A PUPPY??

I CAN'T WAIT!!!!

We just got a 5 month old male puppy sable smoothie fom our breeder for my daughter to leash break and train for the show ring.

:lovestruc:lovestruc OMG, what a beautiful puppy!! :cloud9::love:

Absolutely adorable puppy!!!! Looks a lot like a Havanese, although she is much bigger than our Maggie was when we got her which I think was when she was 7 or 8 weeks. How old is she? We did crate training and I would highly recommend it. You can get dog training books that walk you through how to do it. I wasn't real sure that was the way we wanted to go at first either, but it was great. She potty trained really quickly. The crate was also her "safe house" when she was tired, scared (i.e. the vacumn cleaner was out), etc. During the day, we had the crate in the kitchen. If she wasn't in the crate, the door was always open so she could get in it if she wanted and if she wasn't right next to us, that was usually where she went. Eventually when she was a grown up, she got to the point where she didn't go in the crate anymore, so we don't really use it now except for travel. When she was a small puppy, she would sleep in the crate in our bedroom at night. She did that until she was full grown, but now, she sleeps in the bed and mostly on my feet ! Congratulations on your cute new family member!

Crate is great! I also thought I would feel bad locking a puppy in a crate but she (now 3) loves her "bed" and sometimes goes into it (in the laundry room) to take a nap, especially if she's home alone. Makes her feel secure, I think.

We always give her a little treat before bed. She shuffles right in when I call her to "go to bed."

Also, about housebreaking--don't underestimate the value of a treat. I struggled for 6 months and once I started rewarding with a treat outside she was housebroken very quickly.

My sil actually trained her dog to do her business in a mulched area so her grassy areas were clean.

Yup. I am absolutely CRAZY. Talk to me in a year when the puppy starts cording and my fingers are raw :goodvibes

Want to loan out your daughter? I am not relishing the whole getting back into the show ring thing. But then again, that is what handlers are for.

We need pics of your puppy!!
