Google's 2006 New Years Holiday Doodle?

What's up with the Google Doodle? I understand that the beaver house looks like a 6 for 2006 but what does a beaver have to do with New Year's Day?

Yeah, I was wondering that myself. I didn't look closely at it, but at first glance I thought they were a little early with a groundhog.

Right! I thought it was a groundhog too but upon closer inspection it is indeed a beaver!
