Google Maps - What is this??

It might be/had been a landscaping farm.

Just from looking at the photo, it looks like it was once a lake.

Look at the lake to the right of the highway. It was obviously filled in and cut in half to put the road thru. The borders of that lake seem to continue to the borders of the "mystery area".

There are sandy shorelines and islands evident in the area. What looks at first to be overgrown roads are most likely drainage canals and ponds.

That's my guess!

I would guess that because the 4th runway at OIA is still under construction and the Goldenrod Rd extention is not yet complete in the picture, that it would have to be around early 2001

Mission:SPACE is complete (and the barriers are down) in the photo, so it can not be older than 2003, maybe November/December 2002.

Keep in mind that Google Maps and Google Earth/Keyhole uses a composite of satellite photos from different sources to make a complete scene. Some shots in Central Florida are older than others.

Since Epcot and the Magic Kindgom are so close, I would imagine that they were in the same photo.

That said the majority of the WDW images were taken around early 2003. This is evident by the fact that M:S is finished but a small construction wall remains, along with some other less obvious changes around property.

Pic's have to be much newer. Look in the parking lot of BCV, 2nd row, 5th vehicle up. That's my white Envoy which made it's 1st trip to WDW in Dec 2004. I know it's my Envoy because I put my initials on my red-white & blue Mickey antenna topper.

This is evident by the fact that M:S is finished but a small construction wall remains, along with some other less obvious changes around property.

Actually, I'm going to have to correct you on that. The images we used for the google maps project are huge pictures, with huge file sizes. The average photo covered about 15 km - 25km, with the resolution to be able to zoom in to about 1 meter with picture perfect clarity. Of course those all have to be optimized for the internet, and edited for private security reasons, but just saying that almost whole Disney resort could be on one picture.

This area is an artificial wetland area. It was created in theearly '90's during construction of the expanded Disney-MGM Studios parking lot. The Studios parking lot originally went as far as the big canal that cuts through the middle of the lot. Due to high demand, the parking lot was expanded, but the expansion was into an area that was designated as wetlands. In order to get approval to destroy the wetlands, Disney had to create an equal amount of wetlands somewhere else. So this area just to the west of World Drive was dug up and then planted with wetlands vegetation. The dirt that was hauled out was used to fill the other wetlands for the parking lot.
This process ended up being such a nuisance that when Disney later wanted to develop more wetlands area, instead of creating wetlands, they pproposed the first "wetlands swap" in the state of Florida. They got to develop some wetlands at WDW in exchange for preserving about 10 times as much threatened land elsewhere. Thus Disney's Wilderness Preserve near Poinciana came to be.

I know first hand that the area is just a wetland area. I traveled that gravel road road several times while employed at WDW. There is a small electrical transmission plant, then a gate that leads to the large service area that you see.

If you look carefully at the picture, you'll see that Soarin had not yet begun construction behind the Land, so the photo is at least 3 years old.
