I have run 1 full marathon, 1 half, and several 10 and 15k races in the past year. I would like to know from the people that have completed the Goofy Challenge what they did for training in order to run a 1/2 and a full back to back. I am in awe to anyone that has accomplished that. :worship:

The Events side of WISH is where we will find the Goofy participants right now. I am moving this so you may receive more responses.

As for my Goofy training. I took this from one of our WISH Team members who shared the training suggestions on the tricharlotte dot com web site. It has worked for me the past three Goofy events.

I train as usual for the marathon using the John Bingham program. At the point where the long runs (LR) reach 12 miles is where I would back-to-back with a run half that the day before. 6/12, 7/14...until 10/20. I have rest days immediately before and after these sessions. The LRs are every other week in the Bingham program so there has been plenty of time for my old body to recover.

First things first. Thank you for your response. My DW and I were discussing if I had posted the the thread in the right forum, realized I hadn't but did not know how to move it or get it moved.

That is awesome that you completed the challenge, congrats. Are you planning on doing it again this year?

I am not familiar with the John Bingham program but I will definitely look into that. The LR's are one of the things that burned me out when I was training for my one and only full. Once I get over 15 miles not only does it start to wear on my body I get bored as well. I don't mind training for the half b/c I can get 8 miles and less done in about an hour. I am not sure if I will ever train for a full again.

I pretty much train as if I am running a marathon and do my best with the Goofy. Hopefully I can do a 20 miler here in the next few days so I can officially taper even though I have only run twice in the last 10 days.

What is the weather like in CT? I live near Albany and we probably have 18-20". I was able to run outside on Friday before the storm hit but probably won't run outside again before I head for WDW. I have a treadmill but it isn't the same.

I will be hitting the treadmill tomorrow for a 20 miler. We have about 10" hanging around and the roads are not very clear. I am a weather whimp anyway so I will be on the TM for the rest of winter even if it gets nice.

I finished my official training today. I ran a 10 mile training run on Saturday and then the Jacksonville Marathon today. It's taper time for me.

The easiest Goofy training is to just train for a marathon with a 10 miler on the day before your long run.

Makes sense to me.

John Bingham offers a training program for all levels of participants. I'm very slow and his program fits my style. It is less traumatic for me. There are many programs to follow and as long as you have something, it is good. You should follow some schedule.

Yes, it is a big commitment to train for that full. It is tough on the body, especially if you are going for time, me I just want to do it. It is boring at times as the miles stretch. I use an Ipod to help me along. Nothing but grunting through the time. Imagine, you are fast so have to imagine this, I am very slow and take at least twice as long as you to get it done. I have found myself in meditation during that time.

I will be participating in my second Goofy Challenge this year. I used one of Hal Higdon's Intermediate marathon training programs because it had back to back weekend runs that maxed out at 10 miles on Saturday and 20 on Sunday with maximum weekly mileage of 50 miles. You can see the various Higdon programs on his website, just google Hal Higdon. I tweaked it this year so that I was doing 13 on Saturday and 20 on Sunday with a max weekly mileage of 60 miles.

HTH,
Dan.

I am running Goofy for the second time this year. Last year I did it without doing any back to back runs. I use a modified version of Hal Higdon's intermediate program as well. I don't do back to back runs to avoid injury. However, my midweek runs are three days in a row of running so I do get some edxperience with running on tired legs.
