DH is about to change us over from dial-up to DSL. :)

If it goes well, I'll be back shortly! :) :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

Dan, I'm ready for those picture threads!!!!!!!!

I'm back!

Had a little trouble - it turned out to be our firewall. All set after one phone call.

Well, we aren't SUPER impressed yet. It's WAY BETTER on picture threads and some graphic intensive websites I visit. But honestly, maybe both of us were expecting too much. LOL

We are on a 30 day free trial with AOL Broadband. I NEED to keep my AOL. LOL (I've never really had any problem with them. And I do frequent their message boards.)

If DH isn't happy, we'll explore other options.

OK..... I need more picture threads to test this baby out on!!!
Dan????? !!!!!!

AOL filters there DSL which slows it down. I got rid of it for many reasons and that was one. I still have it for chaep money but use Earthlink for my DSL.

Ok, when you run a speed test...what kind of results are you getting? http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/

On our 56K modem, we were connecting at 44 - 48 most times.

Now with this DSL, it's been at about 195 -197 this afternoon. :(  I know it should be better.

I almost want my dial-up back.

I have noticed it's faster when uploading pics...but honestly, not on much else.

When's my 30 day trial up? LOL

Mitch, do you remember what you were connecting at on AOL Broadband?

It's AOHELL.

There are other providers that are much better.

Not even half as quick as now. It really is an AOL issue.

Sorry.

I guess I live up to my tag :teeth:

I run AOl through my DSL. It's about $14.95 and worth it since I've had the name for 10 years. I've had a lot of trouble with AOL but the numbers tell the story.

2.2 Megabits. :)

SplshMtn99, how far are you away from your Central Office? DSL is highly dependant on the distance from your CO.

A lot of DSL providers say "Oh wow, you can get up to 50 times your dialup speed." Of course, that's if you are RIGHT NEXT to the Central Office. Based on your numbers, I would bet you are at least 10,000 feet from your CO.

You should check out a website called DSL Reports . They have all kinds of information about different provider's DSL capabilities and even will give you rates and providers in your area. I would recommend you and your DH check this site out, and find out exactly how far you are from your CO by using their distance calculator.

Of course, I have a Cable Modem. I am 16,000 feet from my CO, which means I can only get at best 128k which is only 2x a 56k modem from DSL. Which is why I have Cable...

Can you can get a Cable Modem? You can still use AOL through their 'no-connection' accounts which last time I checked was only $10 a month. It may also just be time to be rid of AOL. :):):)

Good luck!

DH says we are something like 15,000 ft from CO. (Small town about 6000 people....2 towns away from large Worcester, MA).

AOL said ( ) we would have 400 minimum.

Funny thing....after 11pm tonight....we are now at 350 - 380. (which isn't too bad after the 56k modem....LOL....but I want better)

We looked at cable....but folks on it here were complaining about downtime & speed.

DH leaves early tomorrow morning for a week business trip to Montana.....so this is all going to have to wait. He has a service ticket into AOL for when he gets home to see if anything else can be done.
(He disabled a few things in machine in case it was conflicting.)

Based on 15,000 feet, your max appears to be 384. That's MAXIMUM. What did their distance calculator say?

Of course, they are going to tell you what they want to get your business, IMHO. I hope you are able to get your speed problem worked out...
