I want to try to make crafts at home with a company. There are tons out there that sound interesting, but want to know if anyone has any REAL first hand experience in making any money. I'm not out to get rich, maybe make 300 a month. Anyone know of any?

I'm no expert, but from what I've heard (for years now) those work at home making crafts/completing projects for these companies stops just short of a scam. I've read about many people who have worked their fingers to the bone and made very little if any $$$ from it. Many of the things you make are "rejected" by the company and that means no $$$ for that item.

I'm sorry, but I put this up there with "stuff envelopes @ home". I think you'd do better to make crafts and sell them at local craft shows - especially with the holiday season approaching, there will be lots of those shows out there.

I do have one in mind that i'm gonna try, and I wont be out a ton of money if it doesnt work out. If it ends up going well, I'll let everyone know!

It didn't work too well for me. The one I signed up for was to make kitchen magnets at home. I had to pay $35 to receive the sample package which I was supposed to make and send back to them with another $12 for their review. It turned out they wanted me to make cat magnets. They supplied me with a picture, magnet sheet, colored material, material paint, and some ribbons. I had to cut the cat out of the magnet sheet and the material paper, glue the material to the magnet, outline the whole cat with the paint, paint on a cat face, shape the ribbon into bows and glue them on as well. The whole thing took forever and looked ridiculous. I didn't even send it back b/c I was sure it would be rejected. Also, in order to make the magnets you have to pay for the supplies (around $150) and then they could reject your magnets if they aren't perfect. Sounds like to much effort for me.

Have you considered working with a direct sales company instead? Yes you do have to go out to do shows, but you set your own schedule and only work when it fits your family and routine. I work with a great jewelry company and love it....and that's in addition to my other full-time job! The potential is great if you get with the right company/product.

Most of the work-at-home deals are scams and I would be very wary of putting much money into them. You can check out the direct sales companies that are out there on the Direct Sales Association's website at dsa.org....there is a very long list of their members and links to the individual sites.

iansmomm,
I agree that most of these are scams!!!
If you want to do assembly at home you may want to call/stop by some machine shops in your area. Many have piece work that they pay people to do at home. Very tedious work but can be done while watching TV. They give all supplies and "jigs" (patterns for the items) there is no out-of-pocket cost to start.
A DF of mine did this years ago, to help her out we'd all go over her house at night when our favorite shows were on and help her with the work and with her 2 young children. She didn't get rich doing it but it helped her out. When she was done with her "order" she'd just bring them back to the shop and pick up the next order. Payment was very prompt - once doing it regularly, everytime she did her drop/pickup, the check for the last drop was always ready for her. Company is still here and still offering piecework for homeworkers.

I know that there are some places that
hire people for piece-meal work making
cookie cutters.
They give you the metal lengths,
and the wooden frame to bend it around.
You get paid for each one you complete,
but you have to be honest about how many
you can make for them, because they
require hundreds per month.
I didn't do it, as my hands don't work very well,
but I know it was honest work.

My aunt checked into making some type of towels that looked like farm ladies. She had to put money up front to get the supplies. She is a master sewer. When she sent her sample back to be evaluated, they rejected it even tho it was the exact mirror image of what they want. So, she took the patterns and made her own and sells them at fairs and such.

Deafmedic,

Hopefully your aunt isn't using patterns that are copyrighted. When I bought a Brother embroidery machine that had Disney designs on it, the seller was very cautious about what I was using the machine for; they're not to be used on anything that would be resold. She went on to tell me of a woman who gave seminars about embroidery machines chatting it up with someone she sat next to on a plane, who turned out to be a Disney lawyer, making sure that the woman wasn't using the designs for anything more than personal use.

You just never know.

If it sounds too good to be true then yes - it probably is. Don't let your desperation get the better of you because most work at home "opportunities" are scams. They are making money off of you instead of the other way around.

The only legitimate ways besides ebay and other conventional ways are mystery shopping and http://www.workathomeagent.com . They will pay you for your work. Check out www.volition.com for more info on mystery shopping.

Making crafts is a great way to make extra $$$, too. Do you have any talents that people would pay you for? That is definitely a way to go.

GL!

I was wondering what any DIS member would pay for a crafted music box, tastefully decorated?
And would you want it to hold things?
Or just to play your favorite song??
