Good vacation destination for solo travel?

I know it's the Dis, but I'm not thinking about WDW. To me, that is my happy FAMILY place. To be there without my kids would make me very sad.

My STBX is taking the kids to his parents' for a week in July. I live in the DC area, and would LOVE to take a cruise but it's $550pp double, or $1100 for just me in the cabin. So that's out. Where could I go for about $500 to cover lodging and food? Or should I just staycation and go see a gazillion movies in a week?

I don't want to stay in and mope, but I don't want to be anywhere romantic or with lots of kids (don't mind the kids, but worry it'd make me sad for mine). Where do singles go on vacation anyway?

Is there a nice but inexpensive hotel near you? If you physically stay home, you'll end up doing "home" stuff, i.e. cleaning and cooking :) If you spend even a few nights in a hotel, and dine out (see restaurant.com for certificates, but be careful of minimums - new certificates available tonight after midnight), it'll be more vacation-like.

I was going to say Vegas for a solo, but that wouldn't work with $500. What about staying in DC, do the Smithsonian and all the touristy stuff? Or maybe a nice beach hotel in Maryland. Seems like there are some pretty good deals out lately. Check travel zoo and Book It . com I have found some great deals through both.

If you enjoy history/education why not drive down to the Williamsburg/Jamestown/Yorktown/Norfolk/VA Beach area? Sure there will be lots of kids and families but there are also many adults that enjoy the area. See the main three: Williamsburg/Yorktown/Jamestown and then checkout the other historical educational things in Norfolk and the area like the Monitor turret in Newport News (can't remember the name of the museum), the Nauticus Museum in Norfolk with the Naval Museum and USS Wisconsin Battleship. There is a Glass Museum somewhere in Norfolk, probably not a good trip to do with kids, the Botanical Garden in Norfolk, and lots of other great things to check out. And you could even find a few quiet hours to just relax on the beach.

ETA: Finding a hotel in VA Beach or Williamsburg this late may be impossible but check out Newport News, Hampton and Norfolk and all the surrounding areas.

What about a nice inn in New England? I personally enjoy touring historic places alone and it's nice to relax in a beautiful area alone sometimes too.

I vote a nice beach resort with plenty of great books and a good bar budget. Don't go for the whole week, maybe just a 4 nighter. Anywhere you go you're going to face a higher price as a single because doubles split the cost of the room. Since I don't know what major airport you could use, I can't get specific. You could try a Club Med. They pair you up if they have another single sometimes.
