Good stops along 5

For us halfway is the Love's in Lost Hills, almost exactly in the middle both directions. We get gas and use the bathroom at Love's, we eat at any spot there we feel like, we've never had a bad meal in Lost Hills. So, for us, that's it, just Lost Hills. lol

OK, so we've stopped other places, Harris Ranch and a wide spot in the road early on in our drive that has Carl's Jr, we stop in those places at times but we always stop in LH. lol

OP- You must be a true Northern Californian as you call it 5! I'm not a native Californian. I lived in LA for 5 years when I first came to CA at age 17, but have been living in the Bay Area ever since. Those first five years must've made a big impression on me, even though I didn't drive, because I think of it as The 5. :rotfl2:

In Oregon we call it I-5. It always throws me when Californians call it "The 5", LOL.

I like Pea Soup Andersen's, the rest area in Buttonwillow and any In-n-Out for stops.

It is definitely worth a stop for a meal, and it has an amazing gift shop (knick knacks from Holland), plus a motel. The pea soup is fantastic.

:yay:

It's actually a Southern California thing. Funny enough, I say the correct thing depending the region (around here, it's 101, 280), down south, it's the 405. However, for I5 - I guess since I first learned about it when I was in college in So Cal, I say the 5.

My suggestion is this: take the 99. A lot more places to stop. It takes a little longer because of some traffic issues, but the trek had a lot better stops and food joints. The 5 is good for Lodi and Stockton, but after that, it's Santa Nella and then not much else.

If you want to make good time, then I-5 is the best way to get down. I know it's not as well populated from about Stockton down to about Santa Clarita, but there's adequate places to stop/eat or even have an emergency overnight stay.

I've taken CA-99 before. It's OK. However, there can be traffic in the cities. That's the one thing there isn't on I-5.

And I've always called it I-5 or "Highway 5".

It's so funny...my mom lived in Southern CA for a few years and Northern for over 25 (still here). She calls the roads we have up here 5 & 9, but 405 is THE 405.

I wonder if it's because the 405 doesn't extend up to Northern California. Does she call things like the 605, THE 605 or just 605? That would be an interesting thing to study...whether the Northern/Southern CA highway naming conventions are only applied to roads that span both N and S CA or does it apply to all roads...

Nearly all the Southern California connector freeways in the Interstate Highway system end in 5. I-105, I-405, I-605, and I-805.

Strangely enough there's two I-205s and even three I-405s. All come off I-5 at some point.

Around the San Francisco Bay Area, the freeways often end in 80. I-280, I-380, I-580, I-680, I-880, and I-980. I also understand that a lot of these numbers are reused for small spur routes around the country where they are near I-80. We even have an I-238, although they call it that for budgetary reasons. It's part of the same route as CA-238 (which is completely surface streets).

NorCal here - we just call it "5"!

I remember when Apricot Tree was about the only thing on the drive down south. So grateful for decent rest-stops and plenty of fast food joints. I would never take 99 - would take too long. I just wanna get to Disneyland!

NorCal here as well and I call it THE 5 (lived here my entire life). However it's the only freeway I do that with, except 405, which I also put THE in front of. Maybe I was meant to be in SoCal?

99 is faster on holiday weekends by far
