Just got a call from a friend of mine whose a bartender at the pub I go to

The Village Police Department here, received a grant to install 16 cameras in the village. There is a huge public outcry about this......people are screaming invasion of privacy.

Some locations I agree with. The rec center has been a huge spot for vandals in the past couple of years, but others are going to be positioned on 'main' street.

Now mind you, this village, is 1 square mile. With oh...2500 residents......chicago, and LA have camera's for comparison lol

So anyway- she calls and tells me nobody in the pub would talk to them, and they are now set up across the st. in the pharmacy parking lot.

Should be on GMA tomorrow...

you can read about the camera's on our local paper websites

www.reformer.com and www.rutlandherald.com

This story made the front page of the Washington Post this morning. The article generally questions the fiscal responsibility of 16 cameras for one small town, when there are only 18 in all of DC. It does seem a bit much to me. The mayor was quoted as saying,"The kids are bad". Are things worse there than in DC? :earseek:

18 in all of DC?? According to who?? I bet they are 18 cameras on the White House alone.

We dont have a mayor....he's the Town Manager, and was my boss for 5 years, I'm going to go search for that story, because I doubt he would say it...

Fiscally its all paid for by a grant, the only cost will be upkeep...the dispatch are already in place 24/7 and that is who would be monitoring the officers when responging to a call in the area of a camera..supposedly its not suppose to be used for criminal stuff- like running a redlight- well thats because we ONLY HAVE 1 STOP LIGHT!!!

18 STREET cameras. Of course there is video surveillence in all federal buildings and a lot of the private ones, too, but the cameras being discussed in the story are video STREET cameras, not interior building cameras.

And I was wrong - DC has 19 street video sirveillence cameras and that is according to the DC police dept.

I went back and re-read the story (details sometimes slip at 5 AM), and I'm sorry, but I did misquote the story. It was a resident (her name is in the article so I won't post it here) who made that statement about the kids.

And the way I read the story was my own take on the fiscal responsibility aspects.

Sorry, sorry, sorry. Mea culpa.

There are apparently a lot of small towns that are getting these street surveilliace cameras, and it does mention that this is being done with federal grant money. I suppose being a city kid I can completely agree with installing the cameras; I just don't know why so many are needed.

I cant get the stupid story to open, I keep getting 'down for maintenance" messages...

I think the issue in the village, is we havent seen the procedures, what exactly they will be used for etc. Meaning- if I park for 2 hours and 5 minutes, will I get a parking ticket in the mail for being over the 2 hours...that sort of thing...

No worry about mixing up info- happens here all the time LOL

The link to the Washington Post story can be found here

Hope it loads for you.

I can certainly understand that on the one hand the cameras could be beneficial, but there is also an element of giving up your privacy and a possibility the purpose of the cameras could be abused. There was a lot of discussion here when the cameras were installed in DC, but in our situation most people seem to see the cameras as a benefit.
