I just became a Disneyland collector since the 50th Anniversary started about 3 years ago. I have a focus on Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion and also 50th Anniversary stuff but if I see something REALLY cool I usually get it. I've sort of thinned out my collection to only what I think is the coolest stuff (was just accumulating too much 'stuff'). I also dabble ocassionally in vintage stuff usually from the opening year (1955).
Seems like most vintage stuff, no matter what it is, Disneyland or otherwise, usually has pretty good interest/value just because it is old. Sort of what collectibles are all about.
In the past three years, I've watched E-bay and disneyshopping.com. I recently picked up the most recent copy of Hakes Official Price Guide to Disney Collectibles. The section for Disneyland in this huge book is tiny!
Based on my observations, there appears to be a lack of non-vintage pre-dating the 50th Anniversary??? Ya there are some art pieces, watches, and a few WDCC pieces, but other than that I haven't seen much at all! Obviously more things will get more collectible as they age, but then they are conisdered 'vintage' typically and don't even need to be a limited edition. There just doesn't seem to be a lot of high-quality limited edition merchandise coming out of Disneyland until recently with the 50th Anniversary and the succes of the POTC movies.
Of course the definition of 'high-quality' is subjective.
I'm referring to merchandise like that created by Kevin Kidney and Jody Daily for the 50th Anniversary. There stuff is gorgeous, well detailed, and very limited, typically to 500 or less pieces (or at most 1500 or less). Stuff such as the Tiki Tangaroa Tree Lamp with the stained glass lights and the Barker Bird replica. The Monorail and Jungle Cruise Boat replicas, etc.
Then there's the Olszewski miniatures. Incredible detail. But pricey of course.
Also more recently the Pirates of the Caribbean Helmsman Big Fig is the best big fig I've ever seen. Very impressive and limited to only $300! I'm surprised those things haven't gone through the roof on E-bay but I guess it's one of those items you have to see it in person to realize how cool it is.
All this stuff has come out recently. I can't believe Disney lacked the creativity and smarts to figure out there is a huge market for high-quality Disneyland Limited Edition merchandise until recent years??
I'm also surprised there is no website or book out there that is cataloging all the Disneyland LE merchandise.
Does anyone know of any resources or know of any very impressive pieces prior to the 50th Anniversary that are high-quality, low in number produced, and really do a good job of representing/reminding you of the park?
P.S. I'm not interested in pins.
I remember one person mentioned a cool idea of limited edition miniature ride replicas that actually work. I guess this would overlap a lot with the Olszewski pieces, but the Olszewski pieces have no motorization or sound.
