Need recommendations please! What would it need? Thank you.

A good gaming laptop will need a fast processor, plenty of RAM, good graphics card, and a large Hi resolution screen to enjoy the gaming experience. Typically all of this in a laptop is much higher than it would be in a desktop computer. You definitely will get more bang for your buck with a gaming desktop vs. laptop. Desktops are much easier to upgrade as well, which is important to those who are into playing the latest games.

It also depends on what games you are talking about. The system needs to be able to handle the basic system requirements of the game. That is a good place to start.

There are plenty of reviews and resources out there if you are interested in purchasing a gaming laptop.

Here are a couple of decent review or information sites:

You are probably better off getting a laptop that gets good reviews as a "gaming laptop" then you are trying to evaluate the basic specs on a laptop to discover if it would make a decent machine for gaming.

Good luck and happy gaming to yourself or the lucky gift receiver!

:thanks: I really appreciate you taking the time for the info. :)

best place to purchase one imho is www.ibuypower.com you can customize what you put in the lap top so it can be exactly what you want it to be. They have been around a long time and make good machines. I wish I could afford one! but hubby bought himself a 1000$ hp quad core (that kind of works for games) and then didn't like it because it was too bulky so I got stuck with it and he bought himself a new mac... talk about angry wife, we had saved money to buy us each a really nice laptop and I got burned by his impulse buy if I had been able to get my own instead of having to take his reject i would have went ibuypower.com!

The only downside of a laptop for gaming is that, from my experience, a laptop will suffer under the pressure faster. Both DH and I have both essentially fried gaming laptops (he works in IT, and he tried everything under the sun to fix them both). You can also get a lot more bang for your buck for a gaming desktop. We both play an MMORPG, and this experience does not seem to be unique to just us. I'm not trying to change the topic; I'm just trying to share my experiences with the OP.

However, there are some situations where you have to have a laptop, and a desktop is not a feasible option.

Having a good video card is important in a gaming computer. Generally, a laptop with an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator or GMA is not going to cut it. And, unfortunately that's what most laptops come with. Otherwise, a fast processor ( around 2.0 GHz is good) and a decent amount of ram (4gb is pretty standard, but not necessary) are important.

If you have a Microcenter near you, go check it out. If not, look at their website. I got an excellent deal on an HP gaming laptop from them last fall. Newegg.com also has a good selection. Dell is not the best place to find a gaming laptop, imo. Too much $$ for little power.

Like other posters said, a desktop is ideal for a gaming machine. The parts are easily exchangeable/ upgradeable and you can get a much more powerful machine for much less money. But, if you need a laptop to game (I did as I split time between my bfs house and my own and desktops don't travel well) this advice should help get you started.

As a side note, a laptop cooling fan is a must have for a gaming laptop. The computers run hot due to all the power and they will burn out quickly if they aren't cooled properly. I use a CoolerMaster Notepal Infinite and it works great.
