Good fundraiser ideas?

Another one that I have heard does really well is selling scented pencils. They are called "smencils" or something like that.

All ages seem to love buying them, not sure how much you make on each one but they sell really quick. No one at our school did them this year but several of the area school did this.

Have a raffle for the parents. Who ever name is picked, doesn't have to do any more fundraising for the rest of the season.
Be very careful doing a raffle.

Check your state gaming laws before you do one. In our state, you need to be a non-profit or a school to conduct any kind of raffle and the game supervisor has to be certified by the state by attending an all day class. There are all sorts of rules regarding the actual raffle tickets, how the game can be played and what you have to report after the game is completed.

In case of a color guard, you may be able to use the school's non-profit status.

One may think "oh the state will never find out, it is just a small colorguard group" but all it takes is one jealous parent of another sport to turn you in.

In our state, some nosy neighbors turned in girls night out bunco games. The police came and shut them down because they were gambling with pennies.

That said, if you are certified, a 50/50 raffle always brings in the cash. The winner gets 50% of the take and the organization gets the other 50%.

Best fundraiser my dd ever took part in was flamingoing the principal. Her group planted 50 pink plastic flamingos in his yard one night and they left a note identifying themselves and what they were raising money for - he then in turn "paid" to have the flamingos removed and picked whose house they would go to next. Those flamingoes wandered all over our small town all summer long from the mayor to the school board president to just about every family in town - the usual donation was 1.00 per flamingo and it was great fun trying to guess who was going to get pinked next.

Do your "victims" sign up before hand saying they are willing to be victims? I can see it being fun if you had a list of potential victims who had agreed to pay the ransom.

However, I think kids would be expelled here if they put 50 flamingos in a principal's yard and then demanded $1.00 a flamingo to remove them. The administration would not be amused that they were basically being pressured to donate $50.00.

But, if you have a pre-approved list, I love this idea.

We just raised 7000 in about 8 weeks to send 6 kids and 5 parents to the Odyssey of The Mind world championships in Iowa. (They are there now).
Here's what we did:

691.00 (one bottle drive- we all sent out mass emails letting people know ahead of time.) We negotiated 6 cents per bottle as well from the local bottle drop place.

250.00 from our school's PTO

1100.00 from local businesses.

4000.00 from a calcutta that we hosted at a local pub. We sold 98 tickets for 50.00 each-the winner won 1K. We had the food donated and the owner of the pub let us use the place and ran a cash bar. We also had a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle that gave us another 600.00 in cash.

360.00 plant sale. We teamed up with a local grower who gave us wholesale prices. This was the first year we tried this and I think it will be very lucrative if we do it again next year. It was pretty last minute.

We also received small donations from teachers, parents etc in our community.

We all worked out tails off but it was really worth it. We live in a town of 17,000 people right outside of Burlington, VT.

Good luck!

This is FULL of great ideas!
The problem is every school sells something - there are 4 schools in the area & they each sell @ least 2 large fundraisers. Then you've got 3 schools doing silent auctions - those all go to the PTC.

I was hoping to find something like Tervis cups which could be sold - since everyone totes those cups. But on Tervis' site they don't show fundrasiers.

We did the carnations when I was in highschool - but it was just Valentine grams...

I thought about that too. I thought it would be cool to have a Tervis Tumbler with the school logo on it. I just wondered if they would sell well since they are at a higher price point.

The fundraisers around here that seem to do the best are the ones that the price point is $5 or under. It's hard to come up with something new and creative for under $5.
