My dd loves to read. She brings home a library book twice a week, and reads 2-3 books per day. She's really showing an interest in chapter books. I'd like some suggestions on good series that are age appropriate for content. I grew up with a book in my hands too, and read both Cujo and Firestarter by Stephen King, when I was in the 3rd grade. I'd like to buy 4-5 books in a series as a Christmas gift. Any ideas?

the only ones I can think of are:

Catwings by Ursula K. LeGuinn
Emily Windsnap

though I don't think there are more than 3 or for the latter....

there are also some nice series by Bruce Coville.

these may be for slightly older kids, but it depends on your DD's level!

around this age DD was reading AA, Fairies, and MT series - as mentioned.

:)

Animal Ark Pets and Rainbow Magic - The Pet Fairies are two series my daughter loves.

How about the Noel Streatfeild "shoes" series? Ballet Shoes, Skating Shoes, Circus Shoes, Dancing shoes, there are a lot of great ones.

She might be a little young for the Babysitters Club, but I read them at her age. I read every single one. I LOVED to read. I would read one of those books a day. I still love to read, and still have all my babysitters club books!

My kids both loved the Magic Treehouse series.

Just checked it out on Amazon, I'll get this for sure. I also remembered Ramona Quimbly by Beverly Cleary. I remember reading those when I was a kid!

Ann of Green Gables. The Babysitters Club. American Girl series.

What about the Little House on the Prairie books?

While I found that my DD6 could read Little House in the Big Woods - when discussing it with her, I found that she was not retaining and comprehending enough to make it worthwhile. So we're putting those back for a year.

I agree with the Magic Tree House Series and also the June B Jones 1st Grader is a hit. DD thinks all the trouble she gets in is really funny and it sparks discussions about appropriate and inappropriate behavior.

I was going to suggest these too. Even my son, who is the reluctant reader of the bunch, loved them.

Some others that come to mind are:

Amelia Bedelia,
Arthur,
Boxcar Mysteries,
Junie B Jones,
Pippi Longstocking,
Nate the Great,
and my favorite were always the Encyclopedia Brown ones.

ETA-Any of the Beverly Cleary books would be good too. And I don't remember the author, but weren't The Littles a part of a series too? I used to really like those at that age.

When I was that age, I read Baby Sitters Club, The Saddle Club, Beverly Clearey books among others.

Boxcar Children series is a good one.

Honestly if you were reading King in 3rd grade, I would probably give her some higher level books and see how it goes.

My 8th grader can read a 600 page book in a matter of hours now if she wants.

Try out the Percy Jackson stuff perhaps? You never know.:thumbsup2

Magic Treehouse, A to Z Mysteries, Flat Stanley Adventures.

if more advanced the Bailey School Kids Series.

How bout the Fudge books by Judy Blume?

ETA: Harriet the Spy!

Favorites here are:

Clementine
Junie B. Jones
Bad Kitty
Frannie K Stein
Fudge series
Ivy and Bean
Katie Kazoo
Roald Dahl books

My 8 year old loves the books by AVI titled, The End of the Beginning: Being the Adventures of a Small Snail (and an Even Smaller Ant, A Beginning, a Muddle, and an End: The Right Way to Write Writing.

My 7 year old hasn't read these yet but I think she will really enjoy them.

They are very cute, funny, includes some cute pictures, short chapters and the writing is very good. The books also can be re-read as the children get older as they are fables.

The author has written other well received books, and has won the Newbury Award as well as been honored for other books.

The stories are great. I read most of the first one when my DD got them.

Here is the review on Amazon. The series gets great reviews:
