Good car rental rate from Priceline

I've been trying to get a good rental rate for a car for our trip 10/18 - 30 for months, but just like everyone else had found, the rates are sky high compared to previous years, but... I just tried Priceline and got a compact car for $14 a day; way better than any other rate. The total with tax and fees was $305. I couldn't find anything near that even with codes and coupons.

If you're going within the next few weeks, I'd suggest trying Priceline. The rate we got was with Budget, so we can pick up and drop off in the airport and not have to hassle with a shuttle, or an 'off brand' agency.

How far in advance do you rec using Priceline? We are going the first week in Dec. Is it to early to try Priceline?

My bid of $14 kept getting refused for about a month before it was accepted about 5 days before our trip. I don't know if this is normal, but this is what happened in my case.
