My Son is almost done with the Harry Potter series, and I'd love to get him started on another series of books. Anyone know of a good one their kids enjoyed. I'm looking for a humorous series for him -- and one that is different than Harry Potter. He's 11 years old---any ideas?

Series?

Lemony Snicket - they're darkly funny.

Non-series?
Kate DeCamillo (sp?) - she wrote "Because of Winn Dixie". She has another book called "The Tale of Despereaux" which is really funny.

I was also going to suggest the Lemony Snicket "Series of Unfortunate Events" book series. The 13th and final one just came out recently. They are definitely a dark twisted humor. My son has read them all.

My son enjoyed the Lemony Snicket books. Has he read those? How about The Chronicles of Narnia? The Lord of the Rings trilogy might be good if he's a pretty advanced reader -- I'm not sure I "get" all of those books, and I'm an adult with a pretty good vocabulary!

Has he read the Kingdom Keepers by Ridley Pearson? That is supposedly going to be a series. He is currently researching the 2nd book in that series and should be writing it soon.

I would also recommend the Lemony Snickets.

How about the Eragon series by Christopher Paolini?

The movie is coming out today.

Eragon definetely... The Lion Witch and Wardrobe books are great as well.

My kids did not like the Lemony Snicket books, they found them boring.

My son read a lot of James Bond books in 5th grade.

Lemony Snicket and The Chronicles of Narnia are the two I'd recommend.

And then once he gets older, high school age maybe, he'd probably like The Lord Of The Rings trilogy.

That was going to be my suggestion as well. My oldest really liked the Lemony Snickett books as well as the Keys to the Kingdom series and the Goosebumps series.

Neither of my kids liked the Charlie Bone series, thought it was a bad rip-off of Harry Potter.

Shoeless Joe was really good. There were a whole bunch of other books like that. My son enjoyed a lot in fifth grade.
Also the series of Shaddow series books: Amongst the hidden is the first book in the series. He loved those books.

Non series:

Al Capone does my shirts
The Get Rick Quick Club--might be 4th grade level though
The Devil's Printer
The Floating Island
Hoot
Holes/
Small Steps
Flushed (same author as Hoot, but different book)

My son likes older books as well.
He liked the Mixed Up Files of Basil E. Frankeweiler and other books by the same author--one was titled Toll Booth something or another.

Lord of the Rings as well. My son read that in 4th and 5th grade.

If he likes spooky stuff, the Goosebumps series is still out there. I think that the same author also writes another series for a bit older kids too.

Another vote for Artemis Fowl series.

Yet another vote for Artemis Fowl. I would also add the Alex Rider books by Anthony Horowitz. Also, if he likes animal books there is a cat clan series by Erin Hunter called Warriors. Finally, there is the Pendragon series. Hope these help!

Time Warp Trio is popular in our house.

Also, more recently, the Hank Zipzer series which is written by Henry Winkler.
