I have a coworker friend at work that is having a surprise work shower on Wed. Her supervisor was collecting $ towards a collective gift, but I wanted to get something a bit nicer. Her registry has already been picked over for her family shower, so I'm looking for ideas. I was thinking of maybe a case of diapers & maybe a cute outfit, if I can keep it under 50. Any thoughts that I would be able to pick up today?

Do you know the sex of the baby? What I would do is get an outfit for the baby sized for a 1 year old. Everyone gives outfits for a newborn at baby showers, but the larger size will come in handy too!

I was thinking diapers in a bigger size (like PP) and a gift card to a baby place (babys R Us etc- so she can pick out something fun when she's ready)

I did not like getting baby clothes. I got too many and even the 1 yr old sizes don't necessarily match up with size when you get to that season. I would get something with a gift receipt that can be returned. Diapers are iffy too, b/c some babies have sensitive skin and some stores might not accept returns. If it is a 1st baby, a nice older baby toy would be great. Maybe a stand up activity table.

I like to give diapers in bigger size, like size 1 or 2. Same thing with outfits, I wouldn't get newborn. I get at least 0-3 months or bigger.

The best gift I received (after any of my three babies' birth) was a lovely gift basket with baby lotions, baby wash, diaper cream, wash clothes for the baby and amazing body scrub, lotions, bath salts, and a gift card for me. It was from a lovely neighbor who just thoughtfully put together an unsolicited gift for us. I liked that it had something nice for me at a time when I felt ugly, gross, and tired. So thoughtful.

Sometimes moms are over looked. If she likes massages or pedicures. I would give a gc and maybe some diapers as well.

I normally buy a less expensive diaper bag and fill it with necessary items like wipes, lotion, diapers, etc. a little something for mom. Nothing expensive just something make her smile.

If it were me, and mom is planning on returning to work, I'd get her a Starbucks gift card. Late nights and early mornings are a recipe to need caffeine, and sometimes, you just don't have the time or energy to make to yourself. I'd also get her a gift card to a typical workplace lunch place ("your regular spot for lunches out"), again b/c sometimes there is no time to grocery shop or bring lunch:).

Put them together in a card called "pampering" Mom:)..

I just had a baby in March. One of the most useful things I got was a "health basket." It was a basket full of the little things you need for emergencies/health issues with babies, but don't necessarily think of until baby is unwell. Infant's tylenol, benadryl, mylicon drops, gripe water, a rectal thermometer, vaseline, neosporin, an oral syringe to measure medicines, orajel, desitin.

This was my go to gift after having my first baby, and finding out I was always running out for these things.

I think my oldest never wore an outfit twice during her first year, none of my kids could use baby wash, shampoo or lotion, and different kids used different diapers.

As the mom of a two month old- I say diapers! I recommend Pampers swaddlers in size 1. I also like the PP suggestions of a Starbucks gift card or pedicure for mom. Especially if her registry is already picked over.

I wouldn't give diapers. The mother might be cloth diapering, the baby might have an allergy, or the baby might be on the bigger side (mine were) and won't use size NB or 1 diapers for very long at all. Plus I had my favorite brand of diapers that I felt worked better for my kids than the other brands. I often give the mom-to-be a gift card to get takeout after the baby is born, because that's what I would have wanted when I had my kids - I never felt like cooking after my c-sections, and DH is a mess in the kitchen (both literally and he doesn't know how to cook anything).

I just did this for a friend- put it all in a basket she could use in the nursery, and I also put notes on all of the items saying what they're for, etc. Like the motrin I wrote on it "after 6 months, good for teething pain and fevers" and for the gas drops I wrote "give BEFORE feeding to relieve gas", etc. One thing to realize though is that these things can really add up- they are not cheap!! I have been into couponing though and used coupons/deals to get most of the stuff on sale, but that only works if you're planning way ahead usually. I also added diaper sacks and boogie wipes (the grape kind because they're amazing). Oh and small mesh laundry bags- I use them for baby socks and wubbanubs.

Baby books are always fun and needed- TJ Maxx/Marshalls have nice ones for cheap. I always give one now instead of a card and tape a note inside just in case they get a duplicate and need to return.

One thing now that many new moms are somewhat sensitive to are Johnson & Johnson products- I had two friends recently return some J&J stuff they got because of all of the hype recently about cancer - causing ingredients. I use the bed time bath soap because it doesn't contain the two ingredients that are suspect but I tossed everything else. I stick to Aveeno and California Baby when buying gifts if I give them just to make sure.

I would too give for the group gift and add a special something for mom if you want. If you want to give a separate baby gift, I love giving board books.
