Hi everybody

When we go next April my brother has decided to join us and he is into Golf big time. He thought he would leave all the planning to me . He has told me he wants to take his clubs and have a few rounds! So what I would like to know from all you golfers out there, which is the best courses to go on at Disney and around the area.

For somebody who has not been to Orlando for 17 years I cannot see where he thinks he is going to get the time from to play!

Brothers who'd have um!

Thanks
Bekki

Hi Bekki. Take a look at this website, which provides a lot of very useful info:

www.progolfguides.com

Basically, it is hard to go wrong in Florida as there are just so many great courses. Shingle Creek near International Drive is getting a lot of good publicity right now, while the Grand Cypress is quite magnificent, if a little expensive. Good luck in your choice!

The link Simon provided is an excellent service for any golfer that's keen to improve their game. A full playing round with a PGA teaching pro is an invaluable insight into how the game should be played. There is also some good information on local courses there.

As to the courses in and around Disney it much depends on if you'll have a car there? If you do then it dramatically increases what's available to him.

On Disney I rank their courses as 1) Osprey Ridge 2) Eagle Pines 3) Magnolia 4) Palm 5) LBV . There is also a pretty decent 9 hole "family" course that's worth thinking about if he's a little rusty before going on to the much more expensive championship courses. You can get some deals on playing "twilight" on Disney courses and this brings the cost down to a more managable ( but still a bit pricey) level. To play "regular" green fees at that time of year ( peak time) is going to be in the range of $150 , twilight you should be able to get close to $50-70 . Here's a link to Disney's golf courses http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw/moreMagic/golf/golfHome?id=GolfHomePage

Off site there are a multitude of courses of differing costs. I think all of them are a match for any "good" quality course I've played in this country. A decent rule of thumb ( in the Orlando area) is the further you're prepared to drive from Disney the cheaper the courses become. Course I like, within a reasonable drive are Falcon's Fire, Orange County National, Southern Dunes, Deer Island , Highlands reserve, Mystic Dunes, Celebration and Poinciana.

If he's looking for a cut price way to play ( and he's flexible) there is a service called Stand by golf ( http://www.standbygolf.com ) . You can only book with this company the night before you want to play, or on the day you want to play and obviously it's subject to availability. The reason they get such good rates is they take up teetimes that have not been already sold, the pro shops know they have minimal chance of filling those times so will let them go at a cheap rate.

Becki I'll be living in Orlando by then, if you email me near to when you're coming over (if I can get time off work) I'll happily take him out for a game somewhere. By then I should have an even better knowledge of the local courses and how to play them for minimal $$$ :D
