It's a legitimate honor society. I am a member. You get a medallion that you wear when you graduate. I think the top 10% of the class got invitations at the university I went to, but it might be different at other schools.
DS got this twice and I ignored it.. It said he was "submitted" by a Teacher.. well on Parent's night I asked ALL his teachers and Not one said Yes that they submitted his name...

I think maybe pfishgirl is thinking of blue key, which is a high school organization and totally unrelated to Golden Key. Golden Key is a honor society for colleges and universities. As I said it is legitimate. It is just something that you can use to show your academic acheivements. You can put it on your resume and wear the medallion when you graduate. Only certain students get invited, and it all depends on your grades and class standing. Other than the medallion and putting it on your resume there aren't many benefits.
Another similar organization is Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, http://www.phikappaphi.org/Web/
The university I went to you had to be in the top two percent of your class to get invited to join. I think the best tangible benefit I received from this honor society was an offer for a credit card with a very low interest rate.
There also may be honor societies specific to the field you majored in.
These are legitimate honor societies, and are a good thing to have on your resume. It doesn't cost that much to join. It is just a nice way to be recognized for your achievements, and on graduation day you will see other people wearing medallions or ribbons for the various honor societies.
