Aloha everyone-

My family is planning a trip to CA and we were interested in trying gold mining. I've done some research and was wondering if there was anyone who has first-hand knowledge on gold mining. We were planning on going in Sept. Is it too cold? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Mahalo!

Definitely not too cold for gold panning although if you plan to get in the water is cold all the time in this area! Not sure what you have in mind, but if you come to outside Sacramento to "Gold Country" area they have several places that rent pans, etc. I'm not sure how likely it is that you would get something, but in Coloma where John Marshall found the gold, they have recreated gold era buildings, etc. There are also places like Empire Mine where you can see old mines and buildings but not sure about doing it yourself there.

I live in northern Cal in between Placerville and Sacramento in Folsom. There are loads of gold country places up here, you can see abandoned gold towns, or open pit mines like Malakoff Diggins State Park.

If you are looking for something in So Cal I can't help, sorry!

I use to live in Columbia (a great gold rush state park btw) and you can pan there, as well as in nearby Jamestown. I would also look at Calaveras County (Angels Camp) and Amador County (Jackson). Recently the Travel Channel had an episode of Cash and`Treasures where the host (Becky) went to a mining camp somewhere near Pioneer. Depending on the area that you would like to visit there can be a plethora of resources available. Remember to search out the Gold Country which stretches from the Mariposa area to Placerville.

Mahalo for the great info! We are glad to hear that it won't be too cold during that time of the year. I really love Northern CA!

I'll be able to do more research based on the info you all were able to provide!

If anyone ever needs assistance planning a Hawaii Trip, please don't hesitate to PM me.

If you are going to be in the gold country area, go the Lake Tahoe as well. It's another 1 or 1 1/2 hours drive.
