HI All, We bought the DVC anniversary 5 day ticket that was offered in the beginning of the year. We are planning to go to Disney Dec 30 through Jan 10. Our original plan was to do a cruise in between thus only needing 5 days of the tickets, however we are now most likely going to stay at disney world the entire trip. So we need more days. My thought was to purchase/upgrade to the DVC Gold annual pass, however there are blackout dates until Jan 2 on the gold annual pass. So can we use the 5 days pass during the black out dates and then on the last day, upgrade to the DVC Gold annual pass so we are covered for the remainder of the trip?

I think that makes sense. It does in my head. :) Thanks in advance for the help.

--------Based on other posts this may not be true------
I believe your only upgrade option after using the ticket during a blackout date will be to upgrade to the premium/platinum whatever the nonblack out date option is.

The rules would be similar to using a water parks and more MYW ticket at a waterpark and then trying to upgrade to an annual pass without the water parks option. They won't let you. As soon as you use your ticket at a waterpark you can only upgrade to an annual pass with waterpark option. So as soon as you use your ticket during a blackout date, you can only upgrade to an annual pass with no blackout dates.

I am far from a ticket expert, but I read somewhere that it is okay to use the first ticket during the AP blackout period. I know it doesn't seem logical, but I believe it to be true.

Yes, you should be able to do that. You do need to do the upgrade on or before the day you use the last admission on the ticket.

It is a process that has long been done at DL where they have had several AP's with blackout days.

Really?!! Because a gold pass would save me hundreds of dollars, so maybe I can do the same thing. We currently have ten day passes and will be there December 26th through the 8th, but won't be going during blackout dates next year.

I'm intrigued by this possibility!!

Please double check this beforehand. I think it was on the theme park board that I read this from a ticketing CM.

How does upgrade work after a ticket has been used? Do you just get the residual value (ie: 1 out of 6 days) applied towards the cost of an AP? I apologize if there is another thread that discuss this.

No... you get the entire gate value of the ticket, but the AP will be back dated to first use of your original tix.

That would be like getting a Platinum pass at Gold price unless one plans to go during blackout periods more than once within the year.

We also purchased the anniversary tickets earlier this year and later decided we wanted Gold APs. I seem to recall reading back then that although you could upgrade the anniversary tickets, you would lose the discount in the process. We decided just to save them for a later trip and got the Gold APs separately. You might want to verify that before you figure your savings.

Well I'm answering the question quoted, and reasonably certain that's the correct answer.
Use a 5 day tix over Christmas, and upgrade to an AP on Jan 3rd and you get gate price credit for your ticket toward any AP.... but the AP is backdated to first use of the 5 day tix.

That sounds too good to be true (I won't hold it against you if it doesn't work:D)! I am hoping Disney won't close this loophole any time soon.

Indeed it is a loophole... according to CM on theme park forum it's intentionally done. No clue why.

That's not quite true. The OP purchased a special discounted ticket directly from Disney, so they will receive credit for the price they paid for the ticket towards the upgrade.

That's what I am expecting. I think I would get credit for the price I paid for the discounted DVC ticket, not the full gate price. I am ok with that if it works. I will give it a shot.

Perhaps I missed it but I don't see where LAX has a promotional ticket.

I don't know if this helps provide any answers. We had regular 7d tickets this past March break (during a black out period) and had them upgraded to gold DVC discounted APs on the last day of our trip. It was backdated to the first day we used the 7d pass. This allowed us to get this trip done within a black out period, and yet still only have paid for a gold pass. We can't go during any other black out time for the rest of the year, but that worked with our planned vacations.

This is exactly what I want to do. So thank you. I will give it a go in January.
