Hi, i want to visit Megan's Bay Beach in St. Thomas. I would like more time than the 2 hours the excursions lists. Time in port is 8am-6pm. Any tips for going on your own? What time would you head back to the ship? Also, what can you bring with you off the ship for beverages? I would rather my kids drink and eat from food i have.. but is there any sealed beverages you can bring along?

thanks!

We took a taxi and were one of the first ones on the beach. With a 6pm departure time, I would head back no later than 4pm.

You can just grab a taxi to take you to Magen's Bay. The area where you pick up the taxis is a short walk from the ship. I'd plan on leaving Magen's Bay about 2 hours before the all aboard time. That's probably being overly cautious, but I'd much rather get back to the ship way too early than just a minute late. You don't want a traffic snarl to make you miss the ship.

There aren't a lot of "free" (included) beverages available on the ship that you could take off. The only drinks I've seen in sealed packages and not costing extra are milk, and you can't take perishable items off the ship. You can order canned beverages from room service but those are an extra cost. I just filled our reusable water bottles with water and drank those. If you want specific drinks to carry off the ship, you may want to bring those onto the ship yourself.

We got off the ship around 8:30am, took a taxi, and had Magen's Bay to ourselves for awhile. Going that early also gives you the chance to get a picnic table. They are free (rather than renting chairs). As the day went on it became packed. We left around 2pm which was plenty of beach time for all. I loved it there!

sounds great! do they care or even have laws for cildren in taxis without carseats? In Aruba i just held DD 2 on my lap. Are there those crazy winding roads to get there or is it pleasant?

I'm not sure about seatbelt laws, but the taxis we rode in were large and open air. They reminded me of the vehicles in Kilimanjaro Safaris ride at Animal Kingdom. The roads are winding and hilly. I'm not sure I would want to drive those roads, especially at night.

Great description. :)

Those are the taxis we saw in St Thomas as well. We didn't go to Magen's Bay (walked into the downtown core then taxied back to Havensight) but I'm pretty sure those were the ones to take to the Bay as well. No seatbelts at all, so definitely no carseats.

The taxi I took was a 15 or 18 passenger van. Not open air and it was fine.

They are not road that those taxis can go very fast on, thankfully. I would just place the kids on the inside. We had a stroller that fit on the back if I remember correctly. The best way to do imo. It rained the morning we were there and ship's excursion was a waste (it still went b/c it was off and on w/ heavy clouds). The skies cleared in the afternoon and we headed out on our own for a few hours. I was glad we didn't book through the ship and never will for that reason.

We want to go on our own so we can have more than two hours at the beach. (and spend less $) Were taxi's readily available for the ride back?

Megan's Bay is absolutely stunning. We actually rent a car, I reserved before getting there. The rental was a short walk from the cruise port. Found it was less expensive than taking a taxi and we would be able to go to other places as well. St Thomas is a US territory and as such you have celular service with no roaming charge, so we use our phone map app to move around. Great experience!

Absolutely, there were plenty of taxis waiting in the parking lot to take tourists back to the cruise ships. No worries, getting to and from Megan's Bay is easy peasy!
How much do taxis cost? I'll be going with my young son. Anything I need to watch out for in regards to safety?

Taxis are $8/pp one-way. They did not charge for my daughter when we went. She's under 2.
