One tip I gave someone a long time ago on DIS is that, in case you are not getting the hang of being at DLR solo after a few hours, one way to sort of engage in conversation or interaction with people is to offer to take as many pictures of people as you can. Every time you see a couple or a family or group of friends assembling for that perfect shot, jump in and offer to take the picture so that everyone can get in it. There is no shortage of people to snap pictures of, so that can keep you busy and mingling all day.
Also, make sure to post on the DIS and ask if anyone will be in the parks that day. Many regulars go often, and you may be able to have a mimi-meet to kill some time so you won't be alone the entire day.
If you like shopping, you can duck into every shop possible and keep busy; no one will notice if you are solo. You can take endless photos of all kinds of intricate details when you are by yourself, with nobody to slow you down.
Really, nobody will notice you being alone. Now, that aside, some folks may still feel awkward or lonely being by themselves - or just plain bored if they don't have friends to laugh with - so that is when you do the things I suggested above and do what everyone else has suggested thus far in this thread. I had a few golden hours to myself on my last DLR trip - I had been with friends who had to leave and one of them came back to pick me up later. It felt slightly odd and foreign at first, but I quickly got right in the swing of the solo thing, and I am sure I could do a full day and night with no trouble. I was disappointed that I didn't have longer because I was on a roll taking photos. I didn't care if I was alone; I was determined to get nighttime PhotoPass pictures taken in front of the IASW Holiday facade and the Winter Castle., so I did. I do think it is more FUN to go with friends, but I can get a lot of things done by myself that I can't do with other people holding me up. And I am used to doing everythig by myself in daily life anyway. I think my ideal DLR trip would be to go with my usual groups of friends for a few days, they leave, and then I have a couple of full days at the end of the trip all to myself.
