I have been lurking on here for a while and considering a vacation. After hemming and hawing I decided to take action and I've finally booked a hotel at Disney World for the last week of August!

I heard that this is a good time to go because the crowds are lighter then, but then someone told me that its hurricane season in Florida during that time.

What happens if a hurricane strikes? Should I reschedule to a different time? I am hoping to buy our airplane tickets soon but want to make sure that I'm not making a big mistake beforehand. Maybe I'm overthinking it completely (I do that sometimes haha).

Last week in August is our usual week to go - never have lost a day of our vacation to a hurricane. It's hurricane season June thought November.

We got to WDW the day after Charley hit, and the surrounding area was wrecked, but WDW property looked fine. Lots of trees down in the nonpark areas, but the parks were spotless and the resorts were running smoothly.

Just buy trip insurance if it makes you feel better.

It is possible , but don't worry about it. I've been going in August for the past 11 years and once in 2011 hurricane Irene was hitting the east coast while we were there. The airlines gave the option of changing flights with no change fee. We did leave WDW one day early to be home before the storm hit. The flight was longer and bumpier than usual. So while it could happen just plan your trip and if something happens work around it. Most likely nothing will happen.

We've gone the last week of August for the past six years. Twice in those six years there was a day or two of severely rainy, windy weather due to a dissipating hurricane. It just made the parks more enjoyable because many people stayed away.

We were there back in the 90s when they actually closed for a Hurricane. It was friggin awesome. We hoarded snacks from the shop. Had beer and wine for the whole week just sitting there waiting for a national disaster. We partied with resort neighbors since it never even stormed late into the night. Dixie Landings at the time.

Best time ever at Disney. It is why we don't worry about going during that time of the year. If you are worried then change your dates around the season. But if you do go and it does storm head over to our room. We will be ready with the juice.

We arrived about 6 hrs before Hurricane Charley made it to Orlando! I think we were among the last flights allowed to land that day! We got to the CR, to find that the parks had closed down for the rest of the day...around 3ish. We had reservations at Chef Mickey's that night, but they closed for the day due to all the glass in the area...too dangerous to remain open and risk winds breaking the windows around the guests! We watched as the monorail cars were brought into the CR, to be stored..that was really strange.
That night, we were told that we could go to a ballroom and get fed. By the time that happened, around 6:30ish, we were told to grab a box, fill it up and return, immediately, to our rooms. It was hysterical watching adults grabbing desserts out of the hands of little kids....heaven forbid they not get that 3rd cupcake. Anyway....when we returned to our rooms, we were told to stay in the room, away from the windows. To close the drapes. We were on the ground floor of the north wing, facing out toward the lake. Disney had about 5 channels of movies, cartoons, etc. on the tv.
When we woke in the morning, MK was open. DHS was opening later. AK remained closed (if I remember correctly) for that day. FtW had been evacuated due to the low lying ground. The resorts were chock a block full...seems a lot of people along the gulf coast had though the storm was hitting them, so they rushed to WDW to get rooms away from the storm. Joke was on them.....Orlando got it much worse.
There were some trees down, but they had been cleaned up. Now the thing that I found interesting was the prep work. Others I know told me that it was incredible watching the CMs go about the business of getting the parks ready for the coming storm. Very calmly removed awnings, put away outdoor furniture, making it all safe. They said it was very impressive.
When we went to get breakfast, at the CR, the CMs at the restaurant (the old steak house one that is gone now beside CM's) apologized to us, saying that they didn't have a full menu. Seriously? You guys just spent the night tying down the resort, then slept on pool chaises in a ballroom, and you're apologizing for not having a full menu? Most of the CR CMs stayed there for 36+ hrs!! We were able to get a fine breakfast.

The odd thing? We kept watching tv and heard the horror stories of the destruction in the area. Just kind of shrugged and figured it was the usual media overstating the 'facts'. We saw very little destruction in the parks or at the resorts. We never lost power, everything was taken care of quietly and efficiently. The parks got more and more crowded as the week went on...the schools were shut down and as the streets got reopened, more and more people just headed to WDW! But, as we made the trip back to MCO a week later? Hugely surprised to see how bad things looked once we were off WDW property!!! The airport was a mess, the highways were a mess. You could see houses with trees on top of them, highway signs hanging down, etc.

It would seem that if there is a hurricane, the best place to be is at WDW!!!! I have never felt safer!! They know exactly what to do. They get everything open and running very quickly! It was pretty amazing to see.

I wouldn't spend time worrying about a hurricane ruining your trip. Hurricanes in Florida aren't as common as one would think. In fact, it's been over a decade since a hurricane has even hit Florida.

If/when a hurricane does come through here, I'm booking a room on property rather than staying at home! My neighborhood loses power at the drop of a hat.

This year will be our third visit during the last two weeks of August due to the fantastic 'magical' deal *** offers then! That alone will keep me coming back this time of year, hurricane season or not!

We've gone down for the last week of August for the past 5 years and were affected by a hurricane once (Hurricane Isaac). If your flight is canceled, WDW will work with you. We rebooked our flight to get down before the Hurricane hit our area (in NY) and had to stay at YC for 2 nights prior to our original reservation starting, so it cost us a little more, but we gained two days of vacation. We've never been affected since. That being said, I have a friend who was on a Disney cruise when Hurricane Sandy hit and got stuck in Orlando for a few days after the cruise ended because all of the delayed and cancelled flights. Finding a hotel was difficult and it cost her a lot of money. I wouldn't hesitate traveling during that time, I would, however, suggest buying trip insurance. Also, expect hot, hot days and afternoon rain showers!
