Hey all! As is typical, I have found some small things to worry about just prior to leaving, so hoping you can help me out!

  • This is our first "resort" stay, and I don't know what the parking etiquette is when checking in. We normally self-park and walk in, but it looks like most people valet the first time they come in, and have bell services get their bags? What should we expect, and how much to tip valet/bell services, etc.?
  • We're staying in a studio, not planning on cooking obviously, but want to pick up some groceries on the way in. Is the mini fridge tiny or decent? Like if we pick up milk, juice, and soda, bagels and cream cheese, will all that fit?
  • Any particular supplies we might find handy in a studio that we'll need to buy? This is our first DVC stay. Just the two of us adults, no kids, no cooking, so I can't think of anything, but just wondering!
  • What day of the week should we plan on visiting the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial? I know we should go early, reserve tickets ahead of time, but should we go on the weekend to avoid rush hour? (We'll be there 9 nights, from Saturday to the following Monday, so we have plenty of days to choose from.)
  • I haven't booked anything through Laniwai yet, though I want to do at least a couple of treatments on different days. I'll be nearly 5 months pregnant, and will definitely discuss that with them when booking, because I know they have some specific prenatal treatments. Just not sure if that means other treatments are unsafe or at the very least, not recommended, but I'll be sure to ask. I'd prefer to have the treatments at their lowest peak times, so if that means Wednesday at 8 AM or something, that's fine by me. Anyone know? I'm guessing weekends are busier?

Really appreciate any and all responses to my questions. Thanks in advance!

Hi Aymekae,

Congratulations on your trip to Aulani. You're going to love it! Below are answers to some of your questions.

1) You need your room key to park in the garage. When you stop at the guard gate to Ko Olina Marina, they will call to Aulani to let them know you are coming. Just let them know when you pull up that you are going to self-park and you should be able to leave your car in the drive while they check you in and whisk you to your room.

2) You have a couple of options for groceries. If you take the exit before Ko Olina(past Wet & Wild), there is a Target, Costco and some grocery stores where you can get provisions. You can also get provisions at the ABC Store across from Aulani or at the store at the resort. I stayed in a studio in June and walked to the ABC Store to get bottled water(it was $10 for 24 bottles, but that's Hawaii); however, I bought my frozen waffles, sausage and oatmeal from the store at Aulani because they were a little cheaper. Here's a link for what's in the Aulani grocery store:
http://advc.disney.go.com/media/dvc.../groceryorder/GroceryOrderForm_AUL_101912.pdf

The fridges in the studio are a good size and I think are a little bit larger than the ones at WDW. Everything you've mentioned(and some) should fit. The studio will have 4 plates, 4 bowls, 4 saucers, 4 sets of silverware, glasses and mugs. They should be replaced on day 4 and 8, but if the maid forgets just call housekeeping and they will bring up extras. Of course, you can also buy extra--but why do that? I didn't find that I needed anything extra for the studio.

3) I don't think it matters when you visit Pearl Harbor, it will still be busy. As you said, go early. Keep in mind that the Arizona Memorial has timed entry. The tickets are free, but you may have an hour or more wait before you can go. Get that ticket first and then decide if you want to get tickets to the Bowfin, USS Missouri or Pacific Aviation Museum. Those you have to pay for.

Absolutely no bags are allowed! That includes camera bags, purses, etc. You can go to the website to see the specifics. They do have lockers you can rent. I just put my money and cell phone in my pocket and carried my camera in my hand. I also did the Bowfin & Missouri while I was waiting for my entry to the Arizona.

In general, rush hour in Oahu can be from 6-9am and 3-7pm. I would usually leave around 8 or 8:30am to visit the sites and I was usually on the tail end of rush hour. If you're used to rush hour in a big city, Oahu is no different. It will take about 30-45 minutes to get to Waikiki(depending on traffic) if you plan to do anything there(Diamond Head, museums, etc.).

We were at Aulani last month and stayed in villa #304, a Pool View studio. Let me try to answer some of your questions.

Parking: When checking in, pull up to the port cochere and, if you want, Bell services can take your bags. Unless you specifically request valet parking, you can leave your car with valet while you check in and get your room keys. Once you get your room keys, you can then get your car and self park if you wish. We usually tip about $2.00 a bag when you use Bell Services.

The studio mini fridge is a decent size. We could easily get a half gallon of milk, some fruit, yogurt, lunch meat, and condiments into it without difficulty. The freezer compartment was even a decent size: We got two frozen entrees in the freezer and had lots of room to spare.

The Aulani General Store didn't have a wide selection of food items. There is an ABC store across the street from Aulani that has a good selection of food items, plus everything else a tourist needs or wants. However, its prices are on the high side. There is a Super Target and Safeway in Kapolei, which is about 5 miles from Ko Olina -- you'll pass them on your way to Aulani from Honolulu. Their prices are more reasonable than the ABC store.

We prepurchased our Pearl Harbor tickets via the Pearl Harbor NPS website at http://www.recreation.gov/tourParkDetail.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=72369. We left Aulani around 9:30 AM on Wednesday and were parking our car by 10:00 AM. The Concierge and Valet CMs can give you driving directions and time estimates to Pearl, and well as any other site on Oahu. They are really very helpful in that regard.

We didn't do a lot of driving on H1 - the interstate that runs from Honolulu to Ko Olina. The times we were on H1 (9:00 - 10:00 AM and 2:00 - 3:00 PM) it wasn't all that bad.

Can't offer any advice about Laniwai because we didn't use any spa services.

Other tips: If you need to do laundry, DVC members can get free tokens from the Front Desk. Otherwise, its $3.00 each for the washer and dryers.

The Daily Iwa shows the events for each day. Its not delivered to your villa, but its available at the Front Desk, the Community hall and several other places around the resort.

The refillable mugs cost $18.99 for length of stay. There are several places around the resort to refill your drinks.

If you are into Disney pin trading, you can trade pins with CMs at the General Store, the Community Hall, Concierge, and the DVC Preview Center.

Aulani has a lounge for guests to use if their villa isn't ready yet, or if you have a late flight on your departure date. Large lockers and showers are available, and a computer with printer so you can print your airline boarding pass.

Here is a link to our Aulani trip report with photos. Hopefully, it will give you some ideas of what to expect. Aulani is a great resort!

I was there about a month ago.
Re: Parking. The above suggestions are fine if you want valet parking and/or bell services. If you want neither, then just self park and take your own bags in. It's really not too far. There is a sign at the entrance to the parking garage that says you need a room key to enter, but that's not correct. Just push the button for a parking ticket and the gate will open. After you check in, then the room key works for both entry and exit.

Ah, thanks for the responses to soothe the worry wart in me. :worship:

I think if we can leave the car in front while we complete check-in (arriving around 4 PM, already checked in online), we're perfectly happy to self-park and bring our own luggage in (with one suitcase a piece and possibly a backpack, we're more than capable!)

I didn't realize the fridge came with a mini freezer, too... awesome!

So the Target has groceries? We will likely be stopping there first.

Thanks for reminding me that dinnerware/utensils are provided. I figured, but hadn't heard how many. If we use it all up in 2 days, for instance, can we still ask for more at that point?

And I think I may have gotten my wires crossed with the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial... if we reserve a ticket online in advance (with I read on that site is $1.50/person), we don't have to be there super early? Only go in early if we don't reserve a time? I don't know if I'll be up to doing a lot more touring around that day (sadly) but I will in a future trip!

We got extra paper plates from our Mousekeeper when we saw her in the hallway.

If you reserve your tickets online, then you'll have a confirmed time for the shuttle to the Arizona Memorial. We had tickets for 11:00 AM, so we planned on getting there about an hour ahead of time just to check out some of the exhibits before we went to the Arizona. I don't know, however, how long we would have had to wait if we didn't already have a reserved time.

Ditto to what previous posts said about parking. We were at Aulani the week after Labor Day. We self parked and since you are a DVC member, the self-parking is free.

The ABC store mentioned is nice with a decent selection of groceries and prepared foods. There are also two small restaurants just across from the ABC store - a BBQ place and a taco place. We ate breakfast at the BBQ place. NO ambience but good food much cheaper than Aulani.

It is recommended that you arrive early to the USS Arizona memorial when reserving your tickets online. I would arrive at least an hour early in order to take the audio walking tour prior to boarding the launch to the Arizona. It was very informative and quite moving.

DW and I got the couples massage at Laniwai. As I told my wife, we've been married for 30 years but for 80 minutes, I was in love with a different woman! It was GREAT! Take full advantage of the hour before your massage time to enjoy the other amenities at the spa. BTW, there is a DVC discount here too.

There are numerous TR's here on the DISboards with lots of information. Mine is linked below. Hope you have a great time...we sure did. Mahalo!!

I have no advice, but we are arriving on Saturday as well. Exciting, isn't it?! See you there :-)

Thanks again for all the help! We are so looking forward to our trip, and I can't even find anything to stress over right now (always a good thing!) In fact, every morning I wake up wondering why I'm not in Hawaii yet. This is going to be a fabulous vacation!

See you there, Lisa! Hope you have a great time!

We just visited two weeks ago, and now we're busy adding on points there so BEWARE! It's very enchanting. :hyper:

The spa is fantastic, and they have lots of experience dealing with all kinds of situations so simply state your concerns. They do give tours of the spa so check with them to find out when those are (i'm thinking they were at 7 pm every evening). We had a couple's facial, and it was fantastic. My office treated me, otherwise I don't know if I could have sprung for it, but plenty of people were booking their next appointments when leaving their last.

Everyone's given you great advice. Just a note: the card reader to the self-parking was having bigtime problems reading everybody's card so after many frustrating tries, we were told to just take a ticket and throw it away (you can still use your keycard to get out of the parking). Anyway, if you try your card a couple of times and it doesn't work, just take a ticket.

Have a GREAT time. We seriously loved it so much, I cried a little as we drove through the portico for the last time on the way to the airport.

Ah! I'm so jealous - we went to Aulani last November and I was almost 5 months pregnant at the time - it was the best vacation ever!! I think the only concern with spa treatments while pregnant is that you don't want to be laying flat on your back for more than a few minutes once you're past 20-ish weeks or so.. just make sure they know you're pregnant and I'm sure they will know what to do. And if anything causes you any pain or makes you feel uncomfortable just speak up.

The hardest thing about being pregnant there was that you're not supposed to stay in hot tubs for prolonged periods of time - I would sit in the infinity tub for a few minutes then sit on the edge while DH was in it, then get back in, and back out, and back in... LOL. But, seriously, have an amazing time - it's so awesome. We cannot wait to go back!!
