HIGHWAY CRACKDOWN
Extra state troopers put on road due to record traffic
fatalities
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- The state Department of Public Safety
plans to put an extra 200 officers on Alabama highways from Monday,
August 13 through Friday, August 17. Public Safety Director Chris
Murphy said the reason is Alabama's record highway fatality rate.
Alabama recorded 1,208 highway deaths during 2006. That was the
highest number since 1973. Alabama five percent increase from 2005
went against the national trend, which saw a two percent decline.
Murphy said motorists realize Alabama has a shortage of state
troopers patrolling the highways and driving speeds reflect that.
The public safety director joined some district attorneys
yesterday to announce the crackdown.
Montgomery County District Attorney Ellen Brooks said the
program means more work for prosecutors, but it will be worth it if
it achieves its goal of saving lives.
