Going Strapless

Neck straps don't have to be uncomfortable. After hanging my brothers' D200 (complete with attached battery grip) around my neck for an hour or so with a padded aftermarket strap on it and feeling absolutely no discomfort at all, I went out the next day and bought one for myself. At $12, it was the cheapest accesory I have ever bought for my camera and probably the most bang for the buck.

While I do think the camera neck strap is a big pain in the butt, I still use it. I don't always have it around my neck as it is uncomfortable, but when its not in use it is around my neck. I am thinking about getting a new one that is longer so I can sometimes wear it in a sling fashion. A bit more comfortable that way. I'm leaning towards the Optec strap.

Optec is great, I wear mine across messenger style and is very comfortable. I only wish my Canon had the swivel rings so I can point the camera down vs. out.

Another satisfied Op/Tech strap user here. It makes a world of difference. Mine is usually around my neck but sometimes messenger-style, or over my shoulder.

I do occasionally shoot without it around my neck, and wrap the strap about my wrist once or twice - like for these shots, which were taken in the open air at about 70mph while I was driving last weekend. Don't try this at home, kiddies.

Did I mention that I really like my fisheye lens? I got a shot of me reflected in one of those shiny tanker-trailers, too. Only in the side, though, I couldn't get behind it like Lightning McQueen's buddy Mack did.

I think I'll give the strap a try for a week or two. I wish Nikon didn't feel the need to put their name on the strap in two inch high yellow letters. They should have made the letters reflective or something too.

I checked out the Op/Tech web site. They make about a million different camera straps. If you're an Op/Tech user, which strap are you wearing?

i started carry my camera bag that way( rather than on my shoulder) and it does seem much more comfortable( across i mean)

I tried that with my old bag. I had to get a bag with a longer strap since, well I am ample in the chest area. It is comfortable that way if your strap is long enough for you.

Oh, another OP\Tech here. I had one for my old Pentax 35mm and had to go get one fo rmy DLSR after I messed up my neck sleeping on the couch last december. I am looking and the wrist grip thingie they have, might get that soon.

Op/Tech Pro Loop Strap here, too. I would have happy with the non-loop version but this was the only one they had at the local college (RIT) photo store (which is one of the best places in town to get this kind of equipment.)

I would feel naked without the camera strap. Sorta the same feeling as driving a car without a seatbelt. I use a lowepro strap that feels and works great. It has quick releases on either end for when I mount the camera to a tripod or monopod.

ROFL!! That car should "keep" the blood pumping through your veins!! Anything bright, fast, and ragtop would work for me!!! I also noticed your in the Rochester area - where abouts? My dh grew up in the Greece area and we spend 3 weeks each summer at the family camp up in the Adirondacks!! Love that nice break from the Cincinnati heat!!

That's my alma mater, though I wasn't a photog. I was in biomedical computing. Now I teach preschool.

This is my major fear. I have a camera worth a lot of money and I am not about to drop it!! Anyone who uses it or any of my cameras (even my 8 year old Sony) must use the strap around their neck.

i'm paranoid about dropping my camera so i always have the strap around my neck or very rarely wrap the strap around my wrist. i do think it would be difficult to change lenses though without a strap of some kind, trying to juggle camera and lens, with a strap you can leave the lens around your neck and mess with the bag and lens

I live probably not even 10 minutes from RIT, so it's a convenient stop. They have all sorts of interesting stuff there, that's where I bought my ball head, lens belt pouch, the aforementioned Op/Tech, and a few other things over the years.

I'm a hand-strapper. I occasionally use a neoprene neckstrap, but my camera and lenses are on the large and heavy side and I find it very uncomfortable. The handstrap feels a lot more natural for me.

thankfully hub now knows what "the glance" means so i don't have to constantly verbally remind ( except he would insert "nag" here) him to put the strap around his neck

There are a number of straps listed here. I am sure that most of them would work without the battery pack.
