Going rate for new glasses with no insurance?

For some of us it's more than a few dollars. I paid $300 at LensCrafters for my sons glasses which broke within a few months, and only $24 for glasses online and they are great- sturdy and well made

I don't think it's a matter of the glasses being sturdy and well made; it's a concern of them not fitting properly. When you get your glasses in person, they measure your eyes, the space between your eyes, etc etc etc. You can't possibly do that online and if your glasses aren't measured properly and the lenses aren't in the proper place, you can do more damage to your eyes and make your vision worse (among other things).

The first time I ordered glasses online, they had a method of measuring your pd using a web cam and markers on the screen. They work perfectly.

I wonder if an eyeglass store would give you the measurement as a courtesy. Or maybe ask the doctor when gettin your vision checked.

You eye doctor should be able to give you your pd measurement at your eye exam. Just ask them for it.

I can tell you Pearlvision won't...I was just there getting my glasses and they wouldn't give me a thing. I asked for my numbers and their response was "we don't do that". So DH measured for me! I now need to decipher my written RX. to order online. I can't afford PV prices-and I bought clearance frames and they came to $375. I have progressives but need to just get reading glasses. What a racket!

Can someone shed some light on these numbers?

OT- +1.25 -0.50 x 030
OS- +1.00 +2.50

I gather the two numbers for the left eye is bc of astigmatism.
but what is the -0.50 x 030 ?

Thanks for any help.

How do you buy glasses online?? Don't you have to be measured for glasses? And if you have bi- or tri-focals, they have to measure where to put the cut in the lens?

I have my eye doctor give me my PD that is the only measurement that you can't get on your own. Everything else I got by taking a few measurements from old glasses and going from there. Honestly for me the bridge gap and such has never been a problem because I know I need a small to medium size frame.

Out of the 3 pairs I've bought online only one gave me issue and it was the eye doctors fault actually because he boosted my prescription to fix a problem when really it just gave me vertigo. When to another eye doctor and they said that the prescription was off and that the other doctor must of been wrong about my vision. Original doctor claimed I don't focus with my left eye when no other eye doctor in my entire 20 years of wearing glasses has said that.

The PD is not part of the prescription because it doesn't change. They aren't giving it to you because they are not required to by law. They want you to purchase your eyewear from them, so they're certainly not going to measure your PD so that you can order your glasses online. If you were to take that prescription to a place like Sears Optical or Costco, they would measure the PD when you pick out your frames. But again, if you're not buying your eyewear from them, they aren't likely to help you out.

The upper line is OD not OT. The sphere is +1.25, cylinder is -0.50 and the axis is 030.

The OS is your left eye. There is no astigmatism in that eye. It's a straight sphere, which is +1.00.

There should have been a slash somewhere before the +2.50, which is the "add" for your bifocal.

If all you want is a pair of reading glasses, just go to the drugstore and try a pair marked +3.50. They should work unless your right eye is highly sensitive to the small amount of astigmatism in it.

Where can I send the bill for my services? :rotfl:

Thank you Marionette! Do you take insurance? :rotfl2:

I completely understand the reasoning behind them not wanting to share. I was just replying to the pp comment. However, my DH got his glasses last year from the same place and they provided him with a complete print out of his RX with all the numbers.

I went and reread my RX and there was no slash before the +2.50 - the Drs' writing is like chicken scratch so....

I wear no line progressive and I get mine at BJ's when they have their half price sale. They actually are half off frame and lenses. My last pair ran me $157 and that was with anti-glare and scratch coating on them. The pair before that had the transition lenses and they were like $100 more... I love going to BJ's they guarantee frames and lenses for 12 months. I did have to pay $20 to get my lens changed out with the warranty.. but hey, $20 is nothing compared to the full price of a new one...:thumbsup2 the frame to replace is free if that breaks.. or at least the coverage I had for the 12 months it was
