Going on Cruise in T-Minus 20 Days... And Kinda Worried!?!?!

My husband gets seasick easily so he has the patch prescribed. On our first cruise, it worked wonders because he took it a day before we left. On our second cruise, he forgot to take it until boarding and he was sick on day/night 1. Not miserable, just mad because he could have prevented it altogether. So if you do get the patch - take it the day before!

As for me, I take other medications so I cannot take the patch because it causes terrible dry-mouth. Bonine works well for me, though. I get car sick easily but don't get terribly seasick. My husband is the opposite. So you just never know how one thing will translate to the other!

Either way, we LOVE cruising and I sleep the best I ever sleep on those beds!

Definitely go with meclizine (Bonine)! Works wonders. I use it at the parks to help with motion sickness on rides too. The only time I have gotten motion sick on a cruise was a Mexican Riviera years ago that was rocking enough that you couldn't walk easily without falling to the side. My mom had been consistently taking meds and was totally fine. The rest of us hadn't bothered, of course felt sick (no vomiting at least), and we skipped out on dinner while we waited for the meds to kick in. Since then, I never skip taking a dose! I always take it at night before bed, just in case of drowsiness, but it hasn't been an issue.

I almost never get motion sickness -- but I did the first night of our first cruise. Had to go back to the room and lay down before the sweets course. Because we'd never done a cruise before, we packed all the things (dramamine, seabands, ginger candy). What helped me was the ginger candy. I started popping a couple of ginger candies in the mid afternoon and never had a problem again.

As far as COVID goes, that's something where you have to just choose your comfort level. We cruised in Dec 2021 because we were willing to take the risk on getting sick. Cruise ships are an environment where it is famously easy to catch a virus. DCL is also famous for keeping their ships super clean -- I remember we never took a walk through the ship without seeing multiple crews doing cleaning, repairs, etc. We've been on two Disney cruises and didn't catch a thing on either. Only you can decide whether you're ready to be on a ship with people who might be sick.

Good luck!

Just returned from a five night Disney Dream last thursday. Couple of days later, My husband came down with cold symtoms(coughing, sneezing,) but so far it is not covid and not sure it was from the cruise. But there were a few people coughing, sneezing. We have sailed 4 Disney and one other line since covid and this cruise was almost full capacity. Haven't had any problems with covid or seasickness. Only time I was super uncomfortable was on the elevators, especially the mid-ship elevators, very crowded. Lucky for us though we were three rooms from the back of the ship and the aft elevators were less crowded. And a one flight walk up/down to Cabanas.
Some of the cast members and guests were wearing masks. We saw crew cleaning and wiping down handrails, elevators, dining areas constantly.

Just got off a 4-day Wish cruise a couple weeks ago. Some thoughts:

I get all sorts of motion sickness. Plane, car, boat, roller coaster, you name it. I've been on several cruises in the past where I've had to take medication or else I just can't function. First floor medical center on any DCL boat provides generic dramamine (I think?), and I find that always does the trick. I always stop by the first day to take a couple packets just in case.
As for the Wish Cruise, I didn't even need it. Could barely feel the boat moving even. In fact, there were times when I had no idea we even left the port. I think it's because with this itinerary, everything's so close, and they don't really need to speed up to make it to the next port. Also it's outside of hurricane season, so maybe the seas are calmer? So I would definitely be more optimistic about sea sickness on this particular cruise. I had taken one cruise from NYC to Bermuda in October, and you could barely walk because the waves were so high and the boat was moving so much. Needless to say, took a lot of dramamine for that one.

Getting covid is still a legit risk. I was on a week long Fantasy cruise in April where many people were quarantined on the second floor after testing positive for Covid while on the ship (and this is back when you still had to take a negative test at the port to even board). On the most recent Wish cruise, many people were still coughing and obviously sick, but we don't have actual numbers since there's no more testing/tracking. In my cruise fb groups, people have mentioned testing positive since getting off the Wish. I personally did not get sick either time. I usually mask in large areas (ie the theatre), but wasn't strict at all about it at other times. Not really going to mask during dining, and you're usually all seated right on top of each other. I'm also fully vaxxed and just got my second booster about a week and a half before the cruise, so I felt fine going in. It's really about what your level of comfort is with the risk. From our cruise, most people who tested positive mentioned recovering from covid like a rough cold. But only you know your risk tolerance.

They also say take it after so you can recover your land legs for 24 hours. Each patch lasts 3 days and pull it off when you’re off a day later. We had a very rough seas on my first trip, and my daughter, and I walked on the pier like we were still on the ship. We zigzagged almost the whole entire cruise down the hallways.

zero cares given about covid and my life could not be better.

zero cares given about sea sickness as well.

My advice. turn off the news and stop worrying so much. doing 3 cruises in 2023 and living MY life according to me, not the news channel.
