Tomorrow I attempt my first 5k race. I haven't finished my 9 week c25k training, but am close, so I hope that I don't crash and burn.

I think that it should be possible to do the half in 2013 if I start now. Does that seem like enough time for this to be a goal?

My little girl is 4 months old and my son is 3 years old. I am 243 lbs (5' 10") and want to be around for their lives. My parents aren't the most healthy, so I have decided to be a runner.

I don't look like a runner and the scale isn't budging (actually I gained 2 lbs a week ago) but I am running and lifting weights and introducing new recipes into our evening meals.

I plan to look for the books from Jeff Galloway at our library or on my Kindle Ap.

I guess I started this thread for support. For others who are going to run that race to get to know me so I am not alone when race time comes and for encouragement.

A year is a long time. I am not that healthy. I need hints and tips.

So, are you going to run? Do you have any hints or tips? Do you think I am crazy to do this?

You will get there same as me - by daily progress and one foot in front of the other.

I am doing the same thing - check out my WISH journal. I was 360 lbs when I first tried the Disney half, trust me, you look way more like a runner than I did/do.

Galloway is a great source, so is this list.

If you are crazy to do this then I am looney toons. A year is enough time for you and for me, it will work if we work it.

Take care, post your progress.

goodness I am all sappy after birthing kiddos. Your post made me tear up! I just posted on the WISH thread that I am starting WISH!!!

Now I will go look for the Journals! Slowly I will learn my way around this site!

So, will you be there in 2013??

Thank you for taking the time for reading my post and for answering. I was nervous to write.

Just another one to say you can definitely do it. Check out the wish journals. They're really inspiring! I don't know about 2013, but I'm doing the princess in 2012 and I'll be 42 and overweight. I started running in March 2011 and my last long run was 8.5 miles. I'm slow but ahead of the sweepers. This is a great and supportive board. Welcome!

Wow, I think I;m in the same boat as all of you here! I am overweight (won;t ever admit my weight to anyone...but let's say that I am in the obese category), and I just started a walk/run program at a Running shop here. I have one really big goal too: the princess 1/2 in Feb 2013. I will be turning 40 that month and it would be awesome!! I have become somewhat "addicted" to running in the short weeks since I started! Anyhoo...my point was to say that it is certainly attainable!! Keep at it and but be reasonable....I think that if you're too strict on yourself you will end up failing (in general, not you specifically :) ). Good luck and I hope to read more of your posts!!

How did the 5k go? If you can bang out a 5k now a year is plenty to do a 1/2. Everyday it gets easier and easier if you keep practicing. 3 years ago I went from couch potato to 1/2 marathoner. I've never looked back.

I ran my first half a few years ago when my son was a year old. I was the kid in gym who could never run the mile and I thought I was crazy for signing up for a half (and I was about 50 lbs overweight), without even so much as a 5k under my belt. I started training in January (running/walking on a treadmill at 3.0-4.0) for 30 minutes. In 4 months with consistency, I was able to complete the half marathon.

From what I've learned from my experiences is that you don't want to do too much too fast - especially if you have a year to train. Most of the training programs are about 12 weeks long. You should spend the time before that just building a solid base. Injury and boredom are things that I have experienced and both can set you back in their own way. If you spend the next 6 months runing no more than 3-4 miles at a time, then you wilL absolutely be ready to train for and run a half in 2013. Best of luck to you.
