If we are driving to the contemporary do we just tell the person at the security gate we are DVC’s and are heading to the totw to see the fireworks?.

From the DVC page on the TOTWL:
"Parking is only available to those staying at Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort or Disney’s Contemporary Resort. Members traveling from other Resorts must use Walt Disney World Transportation.

Parking will also be available for Guests renting the Top of the World Lounge for the duration of the event."

So, you don't drive. You take Disney transportation.

We have usually gone to TOTW after eating at California Grill.
It sounds like you are supposed to use Disney Transportation or take a cab or Uber to get there.
