How many coupons can you use on one item?

I watched a lady use multiple coupons on one item. She had a cart full of stuff and about 200 + coupons -- no-kidding. I noticed that she had a bottle of the olay body wash,and she used about 4 coupons for olay products this was the only olay product that she had. I try to watch when people ahead of me in line check out, trying to get pointers. I'm new to couponing on this level. Can you do this?

Help I don't want to do anything that your not suppose to do.

As far as I know, the only legitimate way that you can use two coupons on one item is if one is a mfg. coupon and one is a store coupon. I'm surprised the cash register didn't catch it if she used four coupons on one item.

That's what I thought, the lady and cashier seemed to be doing alot of talking, and the cashier seemed to be inputing alot of the coupons by hand now that I think about it.
At my stores they will let you use a store coupon with a mfg coupon. But if its buy one get one free they let you use 2 mfg coupons and a store coupon or 2 for's.. you can use store coupon and 2 mfg coupons. I shop at Walmart, Walgreens and Publix . Last trip I used several coupons from Walgreens at Walmart. I have used other grocery store coupons at Publix. They will only except other grocery store coupons. Is it this way most other place's? also I noticed that some of them say do not double? Are there stores that double?
Sorry so many questions, I'm just trying make sure that I'm making the most out of my coupons but I don't want to do have improper coupon etiquette.

Even though a store's logo is printed somewhere on a coupon, if it says mfg. coupon on the coupon, it's supposed to be able to be used at any store that takes mfg. coupons.

They also limit it to five coupons and you have to buy $25 before coupons for them to double. I think there must be other stores with more liberal doubling policies than what we have here.

That stinks DJ! Most of my grocery stores here double...with the exception of WalMart of course. At one time, when we still had the "old" Marsh grocery stores, they and Kroger's would have what I called the "double, triple wars". One week Marsh would do it and then Kroger's would do it the next, they would take a month off and then start again. This quit when Marsh was sold. Boy do I miss those days....
