Gluten Allergy help

we are planning a trip in July with me, my wife, daughter, mom and dad, brother and 9 year old niece. We are on the dining plan.

Our sit-downs are whispering canyons, the princess breakfast in norway, the playhouse disney play-n-dine breakfast, crystal palace breakfast, biergarten, sci-fi, and chef mickey's.

Just this week, my niece, Carlee, was diagnosed with a wheat allergy and cannot eat anything with gluten in it.

I have been doing some research with this site and others and I am not the least bit worried that she will be catered to 100%.

I know we have to call all our sit-down places and I will be calling. Does anyone know what I can expect when I call or can anyone give me any tips on how to handle this? I am especially a little concerned with the counter service restaurants. Is there a way they will give me info as to which places offer gluten free options in the parks, etc.

Obviously, the child has had a bad week because she lost some of her favorite things and has been looking forward to this trip. I'd like to get this taken care of asap so she can continue to plan along with us worry free!

First thing you need to do is to contact Brenda Barrett
Brenda.Bennett@disney.com

She will help you. Email her and tell her the allergy and what you are looking for. She is great to work with.

When you call the resturants, you will talk to the chef. They will ask you what would you like to have, some chef's will even tell you if it is not on the menu they will still make it.
My Mom has a Gluten Allergy and we were asked what her favorite meal was and they would make it wheat free.

At counter service places tell them about the allergy and ask to see the book, they all have a book with all the ingredints in all the food.
Most places have the Gluten Free Pizza and some even have Gluten free chicken nuggets, and rolls for hot dogs or hamburgers and fries.

There is also Ice Cream and Popcorn, that is safe. they are now selling Wheat Free brownies and chocolate chip cookies for sale that are pre-packaged. They have a gold lable on it the says "OK".
My Mom was in heaven when she saw this. She bought $40.00 worth of brownies and cookies to take home with her, she says they were great.

If you are staying where they is a food court, call and let them know you are coming and they will offer to have whatever food she wants for every meal.
The food courts are wonderful, they are so helpful.

It is easier then you think, she will be ine in Disney.

Just be careful with the condiments! Ketsup, mustard, pickles, soy sauce, BBQ sauce, salad dressings, mayo, etc all contain wheat. There is wheat in vinegar, and vinegar is in most of those.

Publix carries a decent selection of wheat/gluton free foods and condiments as well as soy milk. The closest one is the Orange Lakes Publix, about a three mile cab ride from the AKL, which you can get to using WDW transportation.

Just to clairify, WDW uses heinz ketchup, and the vinegar they use contains no wheat. They use distilled vinegar from corn.

In addition - if you're worried about the small amounts of potential gluten caused by distilled vinegar that had a wheat base for the alcohol (and I know that some people are concerned about that, I'm not saying that they're wrong, everyone makes their own choices about comfort level) then I wouldn't feel safe eating anything on property. Most of the gluten free foods available on property have much, much higher cross-contamination loads than you could plausibly get from distilled vinegar.

WDW makes an excellent attempt, but when you come down to it, mistakes happen and they frequently make different choices about what constitutes a gluten free food than I would.
