There is evidence that the magnetic field is decreasing at a more rapid rate than at any time in earth's history. Apparently they can decern this by examining elements in ancient clay pottery, etc. There is also speculation that perhaps there was water, an atmosphere, etc on Mars but that it lost its magnetic field and the atmosphere, water, etc was blown away by the solar winds. Earth could not survive without its magnetic shield. Also if there were a significant polar shift to more populated areas, this would present a much greater problem than solar exposure due to global warming. Any thoughts? We obviously can't do anything about the magnetic field.
