Glade Plug Ins UPDATE

At work yesterday, I asked a fire marshall about Glade plug ins. He said they are ok. He uses them in his own house. He said they become a fire hazard when the scent cartridge (solid or oil) is used up and people still leave them plugged in. He said that fires can occur after 2 months of leaving them plugged in with an empty, dry scent cartridge.

Mine leaked and took off the paint finish on our radiator cover. I don't use them anymore. I like the Glade thingies that are in a glass bowlish shape with liquid on the bottom. It has a grey plastic vented lid. They are around $4.00. They last several months.

I got another email about this supposed threat to our homes yesterday, so I went to the urban legends website and there it was, along with the press release from the Glade website explaining the whole misunderstanding. I don't think I'm supposed to put links here, so just google urban legend and you'll find more de-bunking than you can stand. I'm amazed at how many things I believed that aren't true (especially about household products -Swiffer will NOT kill your pets - and missing children!)

One of my students put an article on my desk about Swiffer, how supposedly dogs were licking their paws and dying. I could not convince him it was an urban legend.

Now regarding the Swiffer I do have a question -

if a cat is terrified so much of it and dies of a heart attack from someone chasing it around the house just for laughs - that would be considered the Swiffer killing the pet right??!!!!!

Sorry, just had to ask - my cat is so freaked out over it and it is hilarious to run around the house with her and the Swiffer (or vacuum or something like that) and when it touches her to see her freak out. It is just hilarious!!!!! I know, I'm mean!

I had the weirdest thing once happen to be with the plug-in that has the liquid oil. It was in my laundry room, I had unplugged it and put it on the floor to iron and forgot about it being on the floor. It got knocked over and some of the oil dripped out,

It ate a hole(like ACID) thru half the layers of my no wax flooring!!!

Use the Oil Scented things, they are AWFUL! They leak, if you unplug them, and than plug them back in, and if you get it on your hands, it takes FOREVER for the Smell to leave! I literally burnt the inside of my nostrals, due to it being on my hands for 6 days straight no matter how many times I washed them!

I am totally allergic to glade plug ins. I dont know if anyone else is the same but if I sit in a room with a glade plug in, I get really sore eyes which stream and then get conjunctivitis. I also feel ill. It took me ages to work out why I was feeling so low at home, then someone plugged one in at work and the same thing happened again. I dont suffer from any other allergies so I was a bit shocked. Does anyone else the same????
