*Girls DL Trip* OLD THREAD

Amy, I need a vet's opinion on declawing (front only) on an older cat. Any other good/useful options? The cats are ruining alot right now.

Are you sure you want to hear it? Sometimes a person can regret asking. I declaw the occassional kitten. I've declawed a few mature cats, but I HATE doing it. If the kitty is more than 7-8 pounds, they are usually MISERABLE for a few days to a few weeks since a declaw is amputation of the third digit of all toes on the front feet. There are many different techniques, some are more brutal than others. (we cringe whenever the boss does one).

On the very rare time I am forced to declaw an older cat...bigger cat, I use PLENTY of pain medication and keep them in the clinic for 48 hours to facilitate healing. I only declaw adults (and have likely only done 1 or 2 in the last 10 years) because my boss puts them on my surgical schedule, and she signs my paycheck. I would quit before I declawed a geriatric!!!!

Options, plenty of varied scratching posts. Those silly corrugated cardboard ones are great fun. Move them around, add catnip.

Cut nails every 2 weeks, keeps them a lot duller.

SOft paws...I have never used them, but have a few clients who do regularly. They are little rubber caps that you super glue to the nail. Some cats allow this. They come in a variety of fun colors.

Spray bottle when kitty scratches the couch.

In my area, few practices will do them, period!!

Sorry, lambasted you. You asked, and golly did I have an opinion!!!

Thanks for the info on the Autism resource center Stacie. :thumbsup2 I sent you a PM.

I had to laugh at the camel toe shorts comment. Have you all seen the the camel toe 'video' set to the song Kokomo? It's hilarious! Cheryl if you want a really good laugh, look it up. I'm sure it's on youtube.

OK, have a great night everyone!

That sounds funny. I may have to check that one out when I get home.

Yep you are.

I'd like to do Segway, still. I haven't done it yet. Other than that, I'm not going for any other tours.

Donna is handling the Segway tour. It was a lot of fun last time.

Oh for pities sake. I finally reach 1000 posts and I waste it on a rant about declawing cats. You'd think I was on the CB!!!!

I have to tell you, having my cat declawed was the worst thing I ever did. The vet did not warn me about it, and in fact he was the one to recommend it to me. (This was in 1998.) It completely changed her personality. She went froma fun loving sweet cat to one that was scared and suspicious. She felt vulnerable, and became a 'mean' cat. She now gets huge warnings on her cage at the Vet when I take her in to be groomed. (She's too mean now to go to a regular groomer.) She's ok at home with us around, and once she warms up to people she's ok, but in strange surroundings or when loud people are around, she turns into demon cat.

I would try the soft paws. I used them on my younger cat for a while until her was trained fully on his scratching post. They worked for us.

Good thing is that no one will really truly know what your 1000 post was on actually. Since the number will change as you post more. So if you didn't post this one, and I didn't quote it, it might have gone un-noticed. And yeah, rant to the CB. ;)

Congrats on the 1000 posts!! We should celebrate. Stacie, get the drinks, I'll get the entertainment. :rolleyes1

My first post on the CB ever was asking if I should declaw my cats. I was brand spanking new to the CB as I had previously spent most of my time on the WDW planning board.
Needless to say it caused quite the fire storm. The thread was numerous pages long, full of differing opinions. I was totally unaware of hot topics and all that back then. :rotfl:

Oh, and my cats both kept all their claws.

I hook the drinks up later tonight.....look for them on FB

And you got to be careful with the hot topic stuff over there. Sometimes though, you would be surprised what topic explodes.

No I totally understand. The "twins" we had were declawed when they were little. There are alot of places that only allow you to rent if you have declawed cats, we had them fixed and declawed all in one fell swoop. They recoved from it well. Even still there are alot that won't rent to you if you have cats that aren't declawed. We got Zoe's cat when she was already 2.5 and didn't want to do anything that late, but we cannot get her to stop shredding things. It's terrible. We use the water spray, we have a ton of stratching posts and it's still the carpet, the kids papers, backpacks and duffle bags and suitcases. I wanted an honest opinion. Thanks for giving me an honest opinion.

And congrats on your 1000 posts!!!
