Girl Scout Leaders----summertime ???

I am not doing anything with my Brownie troop this summer. We are going camping 5/6 and our end of year picnic is 6/4 and thats it. We will start up again in Sept. It is to much with vacations.

I am sending my daughter to Girl Scout camp for 2 weeks during the summer.

I have Juniors and Cadets and we don't plan anything big in the summer. We meet up with our Service Unit in May for a sock hop and then in June for rollerskating or something like it.

We've already camped many times this year yet we may have to cancel our Virginia Beach camping trip in late June because people's plans have changed and many cancelled.

I think it would be a good idea to take a general poll of girls/parents. Your Assitant may be right about no one coming. Alot of our girls go away for weeks at a time during summer vaca. We have a enough trouble getting them to come to stuff during the school year. :confused3 They always say how come we don't go on trips, or do more activities and then do not show up. We also have fund raising issues-they don't come to them either then wonder why there is no $$ for anything.

That would annoy me also. What we started doing is charging for the trips. If the show up at the end of the trip we give the parents their cash back. If they do not show up, no money back.

I schedule one summer event for my Girl Scout troop, we pick the date before the end of our regular meetings so everyone has plenty of advance notice. Our weekly meetings run on the school schedule, we start the 2nd week of school and have our last meeting the week before school gets out.

Our summer event is usually early August, it's a good way to get the girls back together again before school starts up at the end of the month. Between family vacations, Girl Scout Camp and other events it's pretty hard to get them together in the summer, especially if it's not planned far in advance.

Well, thank you everyone for your advice and input.
Seems like it is split down the middle as to having an event or not.

I realize if we did a couple of events we would probably get about half of the troop. That is how it went last summer, we did a Welcome to Brownies day at my house complete with a short nature hike (we are right near a small nature preserve), running on an obstacle course, a small craft, and I read some stories to them inside of a tent. We had about half the troop show up and the girls had a blast. They got to see their friends and learn some new things.

Sometimes I think I am too gung-ho about Scouts! LOL.....

It would be nice if our unit offered day camp, then I could have my daughter go and maybe I wouldn't feel like I needed to do more. But they don't. No camporee this year.........The only real option is to send her to a three day sleepaway camp and I don't really feel she is ready for that.

Oh well...........................thanks again for all the advice, words of wisdom!
