Girl Kidnapped At 11 Is Found 18 Years Later

Fill me in - I'm missing something - how did all this come about? I was thinking I heard she walked herself in to the police dept? How come now? How did she get away?

Makes me think about that other story - was that last year that the boy was found that had lived with his abductor for years- though haven't heard any updates on him & they didnt' say how he got away either (that I can remember anyway)

Because a cell phone would have saved her.
I am quite sure that her kidnapper would have aloowed her to keep her cell phone, just in case of emergencies...

no need for sarcasm
, it isn't what I meant about her being saved but maybe gps on the phonw would be a bit helpful now aa days or at least in some form of direction.

They said the crazy guy who was keeping her captive actually brought her and the children he'd fathered by her to UC Berkeley to pass out pamphlets for his crazy personal religion (he claims to hear angelic voices). Everyone who does such a thing at Berkeley gets a background check. They kept an eye on him and a Berkeley police officer felt there was something strange in his relationship with the girl and her kids. They took a look into him and asked him to come into the police station. He came and brought the whole brood with him. That's when the girl told police who she was and they arrested the guy and his wife.

The article in the LA Times said he had been paroled from a Nevada prison in 1999. The abduction was in 1991. That means he spent time in jail, away from the house, and his wife kept the girl and her children locked up. They both need to be put away for life, regardless of any mental illness.

This story has been simply incomprehensible, it's so massively awful.

I wonder what the girl looks like today?

I saw this on the news last night and I just read some of the updates. It does seem the woman was under Stockholm syndrome. I can't believe the culprit managed to get away for so long.

Yes, I mentioned that on page 1, that she probably had Stockholm Syndrome & emotionally battered woman syndrome. Remember people, she was eleven at the time she was abducted.

In training a young elephant, elephant trainers put on a cuff and chain around one foot and stake the chain to the ground. The small elephant can't pull away from it or pull the stake out of the ground at that point. Within a month or two the elephant learns he can't pull the chain out and never tries again. Even when he's a fully grown elephant that can tear down a village, it never occurs to the the elephant after that month or two to try and pull on that chain again even though it can.

Some of you are asking an eleven year old girl who was imprisoned in a soundproof shed, who gave birth there twice with probably no anesthesia perhaps, and repeatedly brutalized by her abductors every day, to yank on the chain when she got older. She probably had long since given up on the thought that she ever had power to get out. She had even watched as her step-dad was powerless to save her. She was probably brutalized at first when she did try to escape. She had been taught her choices and power were taken away from her. She probably learned, that in order to survive, don't fight back. She learned to exist with horror, pain, helplessness and lack. :sad1: While she may be chronologically "29" now. She is a mentally and emotionally stunted 11 year old. Her life as she knew it died then.

Probably being asked what she wanted for breakfast this morning, and learning she (and her children) have choices may have been an ordeal for her.

This whole thing makes me sick, and I can't even express everything I am thinking.

-The officer at UC Berkely is a true HERO.

-The parole officers failed BIG time, and I am very angry about that. Especially with the neighbor complaints and sightings of children in the monster's yard, you would think they would have searched his ENTIRE property, and WELL. How do you miss the car, the tents, the rest of his property? Even if they are somewhat 'hidden' under plants and tarps and fences....you search every inch of a registered sex offender's property, and leave no stone unturned. I've read of captors who had hidden rooms under ground. Lift up the rugs, look closer....it's your job and your duty.

-This poor girl will never be fully healed. She is forever a changed person. Hopefully, therapy will help her and her children, but nobody can erase the memories, or bring back her childhood. Not to mention, she's been brainwashed and has a 'bond' with the monster now.

-I will be doing a lot of praying for this girl and her children, and I hope she can go out and see the world, and live a normal and happy life. I hope she and her kids go to Disney, and do all the wonderful things she missed out on.

-There is no punishment severe enough for this monster and his sick, crazy wife. I was thinking it would be nice to reinact the old days and put these monsters in the coliseam in Rome and let in some lions. But, not before we let in the parent's and anyone else who would like to show them what we think of people like them. They must not die, but this process would be repeated for 18 years---the amount of time he had the girl.

-We must change how we punish and deal with these monsters. There is a high chance that they will be repeat offenders.

I have a lot more thoughts on this, but that is all for now. Carry on.

This is the best description of what it was like for Jaycee that I have read. It really explains why she probably didn't try to escape. Thank you for writing it.

Absolutely! You wrote exactly what I was thinking but couldn't have said it quite as good as you.

At the bottom of one of the Associated Press news reports they said they usually don't release the names of sexual abuse victims. But, since her abduction was so high profile at the time, there was no way they could withhold her name now as it is a follow up to that event.

It seems so far, that the media and police have been granting her anonymity in terms of keeping her face hidden. It will probably be shown later though, when they put her abductors up for trial and she testifies against him.

I agree. Lots of people...victims and criminals...have been tracked down through cell phones. If she'd had a cell phone...especially since her step-father saw the abduction and could have contacted police immediately (he'd probably have his own cell phone on him)...maybe, just maybe, there'd be a different outcome to this story.

I can't imagine the horror her parents are experiencing now, finding out what she went through. And what about all the other parents of abducted children, wondering if there's hope? And what kind of "hope"? That they're alive, and possibly experiencing nightmares such as this? What an unbearable thought.

There is a photo of her taken at the police station the other day. She looks (nearly) exactly the same. She still looks like an eleven year old to me.:sad1:

any chance you could find it? I am interested more so to see how the age progression photos compare to it.

ABCnews.com has an adult photo of her (looks like a portrait, so I don't know if it's age progression or something taken while in captivity or what).

She does look amazingly young. Maybe not 12, but late teens.

He (and his wife) just pleaded not guilty. He faces, at worst, life in prison; they must not have the death penalty where he is being charged.

I hear ya! There were A LOT of missed opportunities in this case, and that's the headline on CNN now - law enforcement apparently knows it too. He was arrested in 1999 but no search was done then either?! I just want to scream. :sad2:

CNN BREAKING NEWS: Authorities obtain search warrant for Phillip Garrido's home in connection with killings in 1990s, police spokesman says.
