My DH has an avid sailor friend who told him he always keeps a box of ginger snaps on his boat when he cruises. He says they're great for motion sickness and swears by them.

I'm not keen on taking medication for something we "might" need so alternatives like this (or "sea bands") are much more attractive.

Anyone heard of this?

I have used Ginger Capsules and they work great. Ginger helps settle the stomach, so I would assume that Ginger Snaps would help.

I get the capsules and start taking them a few days before the cruise. I then take them four times during the day and if I start to feel a little sick I take a few more. No side effects.

Rence,

Did you take one capsule per day prior to the cruise then 4 per day while on the cruise?

We also took the ginger capsules for our Feb cruise. We took 2 a day and never experienced any motion sickness at all.

We also started taking them 2 days before the cruise.::yes::

Hello all!

We are fresh off of the Disney Magic May 1st Cruise and had a very cool experience on St. John concerning the subject of this thread. We did the St. John Eco Hike excursion, which was awesom by the way, and our guide told us of the unique relationship between ginger and sailors. He said that the very first "treatment" for sea sickness was ginger. Sailors would chew on the root to help combat the sea sickness.

Just thought I would share! :)

I guess there is truth to the rumors! The ginger capsules sound like a much better option than taking the medications.

Ginger root history is fun trivia Three Circles!

Thanks everyone. Gotta love these boards!

I turn my head too fast and get dizzy... So I started taking ginger daily. I got them at Wal-Mart and they are 550mg capsules. My DD and I are weekend warriors so I take two thursday and friday and I'm ready for Mission:Space by saturday. I took generic dramamine and it made a better sleeping pill so I'm glad that ginger was an option. I am amazed at how well it works.

I sort of ramp up the ginger so that I am at 4 a day the day before the cruise. One before each meal and one at bed.

The first cruise we had rough seas and other passengers were getting sea sick. I just took one or two ginger capsules every couple of hours and I was fine. I am normally prone to motion sickness and no problems.

I now take ginger in advance of any theme park trips and it helps with the marathon coaster riding.

I sipped ginger ale also as a quick queasy reliever....:)

Here's another vote for ginger capsules. They're natural and don't have any side effects.

Both of my girls have taken them while cruising. It did a great job in getting them over that "first cruise, first day" queasiness. :D

I take ginger capsules..and keep the sea bands with me.

I take dramamine the morning of the cruise..and have never had to take it again.

Ginger biscuits / Ginger Capsules have always been used in the UK as a natural remedy for morning sickness in pregnancy so i'm sure they would work just as well for motion sickness and what a great excuse to eat biscuits ;)

Does anyone know if ginger would work for children (3 & 4). I'm sure they wouldn't swallow the capsules, but I may be able to get it down them some way! I'd rather do something natural to prevent them getting sick than giving them medication. Any thoughts?

We have a store on the west coast called Trader Joes. They make a ginger candy called ginger chews. It's kind of like a ginger taffy.

I have also used crystalized ginger and ginger mints!

I also reccommend aromatherapy. If you can find essential oils in lemon or mint, they are great for queasy stomachs.

Whenever I have a stomach flu I always drink ginger ale and it seems to help so this makesense to me. Also when we were on a snorkling cruise in Hawaii last summer a little boy was real sick and the crew brought him ginger ale to sip.
I think I'll be buying ginger capsules for our cruise, I would rather not give medicines to the kids so this makes sense to me. Also I would rather not take something that is going to make me sleepy! Don't want to miss a minute of my cruise!!!!

I've not seen these capsules the previous posters are referring to, but most capsules will come apart. Pull the capsule apart, put the ginger in a drink, on top of jello (or whatever). I do this w/ my dd's all the time. 1/2 the time they don't even know it's there!:sunny:

When we went on an RCI cruise last August my mom took ginger snaps and ginger ale. It was a nice little afternoon snack that served a great purpose. Never got sick or dizzy once, even when the boat had to go full speed ahead for a medical emergency!

Greysword ~ Thanks for the links!

I just wanted to mention that the Mayo Clinic link says, there are possible side effects - heartburn and increased taste sensitivity.

They also mention that ginger is "not recommended for morning sickness, especially if you have a history of bleeding disorders or miscarriage."

Be sure to check the ingredients. With some commercially available Ginger Snaps, it's hard to find any ginger on the ingredients list!
