Gift suggestions

Help! I am baffled. I need to get a gift for someone who has earned his black belt in Aikido. I would like something meaningful, but am drawing a blank. I know people here always have such great ideas.

My 3 kids are all black belts in Tae Kwon Do, so it's a little different, but still a martial art. Most black belt certificates are beautiful (and oversized) and need to be framed, so my suggestion is a gift certificate to a framing shop (even Michael's does this). It's expensive to frame, but it becomes a piece of art and is something nice to display.

I've also taken pictures during the test or ceremony of my child with his instructor - you could do that and have it framed.

Is this person a child or an adult - that may make a difference in gift suggestions. I'll try to think of some other ideas.

The person getting a black belt is an adult. It's the first time I needed to get a 'Martial Arts' gift and wanted something meaningful.

I do like the frame idea!

Frankly, it isn't really a gift giving occasion but I would either go with the framing certificate or a certificate to their gym to purchase additional equipment or uniforms.

All of my kids are TKD black belts and we took them out to eat after they passed their tests.

I agree with golfgal that it isn't really a gift giving occasion - more of a celebration of their achievement. One young woman's (she's 20) family presented her with a Vermont Teddy Bear karate bear. She was thrilled but that won't work for everyone.

I still like the frame idea or as golfgal mentioned a GC to the gym to purchase equipment, uniforms, etc. That sure adds up quickly!

Thanks everyone for all your information. I wasn't sure how much of a gift-giving/non gift-giving occasion this was. However, I am going to get something since this young man has been through some emotional turmoil lately. I want to do something to make him feel special in some way. I like the frame idea alot.

Another idea-does he have a rack to display his other belts? That would be something else to look into.
