The 20 year old son of one of my best friends has joined the Army and leaves for Ft. Benning on May 1st.

The family is having a send off party for him tomorrow night. I'd like to bring a card and a gift to give him but I'm kind of at a loss as to what to get. I can always give him some money and I'm sure that would be appreciated, but I wanted to give him something a little more personal.

I'm really proud of this young man. His parents have been fighting this dream of his for two years now, but they are finally starting to come around. I think it's another one of the consequences of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and all of the postive media attention paid to our Armed Forces! :) :)

Any suggestions on a gift?

Another suggestion in case you can't find the radio in time --

a calling card with a LOT of minutes.

My nephew leaves for boot camp in a few weeks. My dad gave him a bag with envelopes, writing tablets, a pen, a soap holder and a toothbrush holder. I am going to give him a phone card. That way he has no excuse for not calling me.

I was going to suggest a phone card, too. Another thing you could do that would be a gift for his family too, is take doxdogy's suggestion of stationery and address several envelopes to his parents (or you if you want him to write). That way he can write a letter and just pop it into an envelope and mail it :) He won't have to pay postage I don't think.
