Gift Receipts - Beware!

The gift receipt is treated as any other receipt, however the way the return is processed is a bit different. For example, where I work a return must be done in the same way it was paid, ex. cash for cash, card for card, gift card for gift card, check for cash. We do NOT give cash for a credit card transaction, but must credit the account. Usually with gift receipts either it doesn't state the payment method or the person wanting the return doesn't have the method of payment with them (someone else's Visa for example). As such, the return is processed to be done onto a gift card. No where I have worked have we ever just handed over cash with a gift receipt (been working retail for 11 years now).

This is exactly how it works in my store too. Most people are happy with our merchandise credits though. When we process a return the item will automatically come up the most current price, if there is a difference from the gift receipt we have to manually change it.

My guess is The Sharper Image has a similar system and the cashier wasn't paying attention. If that is not the case, then what The Sharper Image has done is wrong and it makes me wonder about the point of a gift receipt.:confused3

i hate gift receipts.... i took two pair of sleep pants back to old navy today with a gift receipt and i just figured they would give me cash ( i was going to go buy a disney gift card with it haha) and now i have a crappy old navy gift card and i hate old navy :(

I worked at Old Navy when I was in college. The gift receipt is actually saving you from getting some ridiculously low amount for an item. We would have people return after Christmas without receipt or gift receipt and get a couple of dollars for something that was a lot more, especially because EVERYTHING got marked down after the holidays.

OK, I have to get in here... after my fourth post holiday return trip to a fourth store last night... I've decided to give gift cards to everyone but the small children next year - no kidding!! On the 27th I went to K-Mart to return a pair of very large sleep pants, two things of perfume (I'm allergic to perfume), a duplicate Cars car, and a package of socks my DH received that were too small. Noone in my family or his gives anyone receipts (except us) and noone ever bothers to ask about sizes - especially for DS5 and DS7 - they just guess :confused3 So anyway, they said they could only take back the car (it had a KMart price tag) and the sleep pants (Joe Boxer) b/c they only take returns of their specific brands (Joe Boxer, Basic Edition, etc) without receipts... I thought, OK.... but didn't worry too much b/c my next stop was WM and they generally take anything back. Not true anymore... went to WM and attempted to take back the aforementioned socks and perfume, in addition to two movies with WM stickers and never opened and a Fur Real Friends cat that DS5 already had.... guess what they took back... the socks! That was it!! They said they don't take anything electronic back without a receipt - even if it's obvious it was theirs  So I was ticked but still had to stop by Target so I figured maybe they would be easier to deal with... We got to Target and they took only the movies back (after I took the WM stickers off) but said DH could bring the cat back. We got a gift card but the kids just went straight back and picked out movies they didn't already have... their policy is that you can only bring back 2 items per year without a receipt. So the big kicker/ deal breaker was last night when DS5 refused to wear the grey Old Navy fleece SIL bought him... we went out to the mall to Old Navy and I had him pick out a different color... took it up and stood in the long long line... got to the counter and the girl told me that she couldn't exchange it  The one I was returning still had the tags on it and everything, they were identical minus the color... she said I could return it and the company would mail me a gift certificate in a week or so... I've never heard anything so absurd!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So, next year's C'mas shopping will be super easy... I'm buying everyone except the kids gift cards and they can buy what they want... at least then I don't have to worry about my loved ones going through the crap I've went through the past few days... And... at least I don't have to worry about losing money b/c the store won't give them more than a couple of bucks for something I spent $30 or more on... I sure hope that someone out there had better luck with returns!! Happy New Year!!
