I just realized this is possible. Does anyone actually do this? Say we are going on a trip and staying at Springhill Suites by Marriott. Could you buy gift certificates for the amount of your stay to pay for it and actually earn points for this? You could do this for just about every purchase even if its not a merchant listed on the points site. Does this take too much time and energy?

As far as I know, it is possible. I haven't tried it myself, but will if I need to

Unless there is a limit on how many giftcertificates you could redeem, why not? I am actually testing this out myself for other gc's for the holidays. I'm going to buy my gc's, earn points, then spend the gc's on my in-store purchases.
I've actually had members buy Amazon GC's to earn their points then use their gc's at the site.

Hoping its OK to mention, but ClicktotheMagic does when you shop its merchants. I am also working with an outside vendor that will award rewards for ordering GC's. More to come on that soon, I am looking for testers for this.
