I know all about the gift card "tricks" using discounted Target gift cards to buy Disney gift cards with the RedCard discount and such, and I think I stumbled upon a way to extend that savings.
I can typically get the Disney Gift Cards with an average savings of about 12% after all discounts and rebates have been factored in. Since we are DVC members, I don't typically pay any attention to WDTC packages or specials since we don't need them. Then I remembered our honeymoon back in 2002, when I didn't know any better, and booked an all-inclusive package, including airfare and ground transportation, through the WDTC. I checked the rules of the DVA and realized that you can use the account to pay for your package...including airfare and ground transfers.
Ok, so maybe Disney jacks up the prices of the airfare. So I priced out the package with and without airfare and compared it to the airfare listed on the airline's site...it was exactly the same.
So the way I see it, if you book a package (say, during FREE dining...) and use the "gift card trick" and your DVA, you can save another 10-12% off your AIRFARE too! The only downside I see is that it is not always the best idea to book your airfare through a third party, even if it is Disney. Even so, 10% off airfare is nothing to shake a stick at! That's over $100 savings for our family of 4, not to mention the $20 gift card bonus from the DVA. I also realize that you are losing out on any discount that you could get by purchasing your park tickets separately (like from UCT) but the savings off the airfare may counter that anyways.
What am I missing?? This seems a little too good to be true...
