My daughter's best friend and her family are joining us on a cruise in January, I want to give her a surprise basket as a Christmas present. Any ideas?
What a sweet and wonderful idea! You are such a good friend! You might want to check out the "Must Haves" thread that was started yesterday for some ideas. http://www.disboards.com/threads/must-haves.3466907/
Tervis mugs with handles (I don't think the handles are sold on the ship, at least they never used to be) might be a neat idea. Personal drink mugs are always a good idea for carrying drinks around the ship. Other ideas that were listed in the other thread that you might consider include things like candy and treats for the movie theater, lip balm with sunscreen, highlighters in different colours for marking the navigators with things you want to do, pirate gear, a small game for downtime on ship days (some examples were listed in the other thread), customized door magnets, ear buds, a puzzle book, towel clips, or a small flashlight or nightlight.
You didn't mention the age of your daughter's friend, but depending upon your spending limit, other options could include things like H2O+ products that are used on the ship (a different brand is used in concierge, but you can still ask for H2O+ products). They are sold online and listed under "Body and Spa" "Disney Resort Amenities." I love their Bath Aquatics Natural Spring Shampoo and Conditioner. Every time I use mine at home it reminds me of Disney. This would be best for a teen friend vs. a younger one.), reef flip flops (one of my best friends bought me my first pair!) and t-shirts.
Well, in that case, you can add the $1 and $2 bills for tips for room service in an envelope that says "Treat yourself to a Mickey Bar!" or something like that. (Being a teen may mean that she might even enjoy an evening snack in the room while her family is elsewhere on the ship as well.) Also, when my daughter was high school age and even now in college, she always asks for "cool band-aids" as one of her stocking gifts. There are lots of Disney ones to choose from usually and you could stick some together with a little minor emergency kit (Target usually has Johnson and Johnson brand ones in their dollar section and there is extra room inside the kit to add "bonus" items).
Consider her interests...does she like music? Could your daughter help you put together a playlist of vacation songs for her along with an iTunes gift card? Does she read? There are a number of Disney novels available, perhaps one from the Hidden Mickey series by Nancy Temple Rodrigue? (I haven't read them yet, but I want to.) Your daughter could make and include a friendship bracelet in her friend's favourite character's colours. (Do kids even do those anymore? My kids were still making them up to a year or so ago, but times change.) If your daughter and her friend are into Disneybounding or even just want to have some fun while on vacation away from their peers, you might want to look for some Disney-inspired earrings or jewelry, hair bows or ties, or other accessories. Your daughter will definitely know her friend best, I am sure, when it comes to picking out items that she would like and use.
Just a quick note - many foreign countries that the CMs come from don't really like those $2 bills. Some won't even accept them as real money. It's best to just stick with $1 bills for tipping.
