Wow, it really is the end of an era. I have watched these shows since junior high. I am really sad about it. It's being reported that Katie Couric is getting a contract for $25 million for a talk show?????? I can honestly say that I will not watch any ABC show during those afternoon hours. :sad1:

i think the need for "fake" story lines was inevitably going to end with all the reality shows. Why watch something made up when you can watch something "real" and more exposing?

I saw that rumor, but wouldn't it make more sense to have her replace Oprah when that goes off the air?

My mom would be devasted. However, she was filling me in on some of the storylines and I said "wait. This is the same one from 20 years ago." She said yes, they seem to be recycling them.

it was heart breaking when Guiding light went off the air. I grew up watching it and stayed true till the end. I kept the last episode LOL! Nothing better than a trashy soap....

These shows are VERY expensive to produce. Doing a 1 hour show every week, 5 days a week adds up. Plus adding to that the salaries of the actors, and I would bet some of them are making $$$, especially if they've been on the show a long time. Katie Courics $25 million is a drop in the bucket for the networks in comparison to what these shows cost.

Where did you read that???

I saw it on TMZ last night.

They had Katie Couric coming out of a LA restaurant and reported that she is in negotiations to host her own talk show during that General Hospital time slot on ABC (as a poster above stated).

I tried googling it and nothing came up...

TMZ isn't exactly a reliable source.

Doesn't mean the show is cancelled, they could move times...

I think it's just a rumor/speculation at this point. Until there's some kind of official announcement, I'll remain confident that ABC won't mess it!

I did not say it was credible or not, I do not watch GH, all I am saying is that I saw this on TMZ last night. The staff caught her coming out of an LA restaurant as she was in discussions for a new talk show to be shown at GH's time slot.

I heard that the OWN might pick up the cancelled soaps. I have watched OLTL and GH since I was in Middle School. Geesh, GH was in black and white when I first watched it....Dark Shadows was right after GH. I will really miss my afternoon entertainment. I have pretty much stopped watching all talk shows....Oprah, Dr. Phil, The Drs....occasionally watch Ellen as she is still interesting and entertaining. I guess I will actually get something accomplished in the afternoon if GH and OLTL really go off the air.

I can't wait for the 40 year boxed set to come out on Blu-Ray.

I have always felt that in some ways Katie Couric was manufactured by the networks. I don't find her at all insightful, I found her interviews adversarial and whiny, but somewhere along the line, she was given superstar status for reporting the news. Now she is news, and I guess I just don't understand. She must have much more of a following than I give her credit for.

The only use I saw for soaps was to give some talented stage actors a chance to make a decent salary. Otherwise, I think soaps gave many people (especially teenage girls) a very wrong perception of serious issues (like marrying your rapist). So I'm not crying that they are on the way out.

BTW, TMZ might be trashy but they're usually right on. It is run by a lawyer.

TMZ reported it on AOL today. Also, TMZ were the first to report that AMC and OLTL were on the verge of cancellation and they were spot on. I know a lot of "closet" soap watchers and they are not happy either. They don't have any idea who really watches them or TIVO's them. I attended every Super Soap Weekend and also the Broadway Equity Cares for AIDS concert in March. It's just sad and my life will certainly go on, but I enjoy watching them and feel like a part of my family is going away. I don't think we need more reality shows and talk shows. Other than Ellen and now that Oprah is leaving, there are not many shows that will appeal to me in the afternoons.

After cancelling AMC and OLTL, I have no confidence in ABC or Brian Frons.

Yeah, its Harvey the street guy on People's Court. I am consistently amazed at how the man gets his information.

And personally if everybody at General Hospital is NOT looking for another job, then they should be. Cause I really don't see Tim Gunn being much of a lead in for them. And I love the man. I'm just waiting for the hammer to drop. I used to love GH but its been a long time since I've watched.

I remember as a teenager running home fron Jr High just so I would not miss GH and Dark Shadows. Of course I stopped watching GH when Laura was raped and they turned it into a love of a lifetime.............

This is sad to hear. So many soap operas that have gone on for decades have ended in the last ten or fifteen years. It really is the end of an era.

Daytime TV is the pits now! When I was off of work one day I decided to check out the listings and there wasn't a thing I would watch except Ellen. I remember fondly being into a few soaps when I was in college. It's too bad.
