GFV purchase questions

Ok. Addonitis has caught up with me as I am home trying to recover from whatever -itis my kids have brought home from school. I am wondering, very prematurely, about what happens when a resort opens for sale in the middle of a use year. Do you get points for the current year? i.e. Points for sale July 2012, you own March UY but resort won't open until November 2012. I couldn't remember what happened with BLT. Anyone remember?

Just for fun, I had a good chuckle at our recent WDW visit when a boat captain told me that after GFV, they will start building the new Poly DVC (believe he pointed out which building will be torn down) and then the south tower of BLT will be next.

Pre-opening sales of BLT started in October 2008 selling a use year that began Feb 2009 for an opening in Aug 2009 and exisitng members could buy points if they started after Jan 2009, i.e., a Feb use year member could get Feb 2009 points but a December use year member could not get points that began before Dec 2009 even though the resort opened in Aug 2009. Pre-opening sales of AKV started in Feb 2007 selling a Feb 2007 use year for an opening in July 2007 with the same rules applicable to exisitn gmembers and their use years as BLT. Possibly following the same pattern, if GFV opens in late 2013 DVD will start with a use year that begins in 2013 before the opening month, although it appears questionable it will be a month, like Feb now, that ends before the date sales actually begin.

It depends on your use year. I was considering VGC but the first year use offered was June for a September opening. My use year is April so I would not get points until the next year. That turned me off and I never did buy them.

You mean the south garden wing of the contemporary?

Yes - that was second on his timeline to be built after tearing down the existing structure. I didn't make mention of the concerns about the land there not being able to support another tower (guess my source on that is the disboards.)

Wow, I never considered this. With a March UY, I may not get this years points, and I guess I feel the same way you do! Wow. People always say DVC isn't giving you anything when they tell buyers anything "special" when they give current UY's points. I just assumed you would get them if you bought into a new resort.

Thank you - as obsessed as I was at the time of our BLT add-on, I couldn't remember the details. I guess since we have a March UY, sales would have to start next month for us to get 2013 points. I wonder what dictates how early sales start for a new development, as it appears so variable. We did get contacted by our new guide, which made me wonder if the gears are going in motion to start sales soon. I presume they are trying hard to sell AKV prior to GFV offering. I would bite on AKV if they offered an extra years points or another 'awesome' incentive.

Perhaps the webcast will offer some new incentive for the 'classic' resorts. I won't hold my breath tho'

Points aren't available until the unit you buy into is ready or until the next UY starts. Assuming opening in the late Fall, I'd assuming the first UY with 2013 points is likely to be somewhere between Aug and Oct. You won't pay dues on the months you don't have points access. If they don't announce sales pretty soon, it might mean the opening time has been delayed.

I noticed in the DVC website that their current incentives ($1,000 off or $500 off and $500 gift card) expire on March 29th. Any chance the offer expiration is timed to coincide with the announcement?

That's when having 2 or more UY comes in handy! When VGC first came out I was going to buy under my march UY but then decided to buy under my december UY so I wouldn't miss out on any points.

When we bought in June of 2009 for the opening of BLT in August of that year we were given the 2009 points but they could not be used until after the resort opened- so we could not stay anywhere on them until September of 2009. We were given a Feb UY- I assume if we had bought in Jan we still would have only gotten the 2009 points and again they would not have been available till the resort opened. I would guess that once you are in the UY that the resort will open you will get points and not before that.
