I'm looking to go away with DH for a long weekend. We've never been and it's far enough away to be away but close enough to go for 3 nights. Is there enough to do there? Any nice hotels you can suggest? We don't want to spend a lot of money but just need to get away. I did a google for hotels and not many came up and they all seemed really expensive or cheap and icky. We're looking to spend about $60 a night. Is that possible there and not stay in a dive? As you can see I'm clueless. Help!

I've only been to Gettysburg for day trips, and not for the last 18 years. We just went to see the battlefields.

Sorry I can't help.

Gettysburg is about an hour (or less) from Harrisburg and Mechanicsburg, you might try looking for hotels in those areas instead.

I don't remember much about Gettysburg, but it didn't seem like there were too many hotels in the area at all.

I would check out Mechanicsburg for hotels, then drive to Gettysburg for a day or so, and maybe go to Hershey for a day or so.

I used to live 45 minutes from Gettysburg. It's a day trip, at best.

If you're not trying to get away from Lancaster, how about going there? It makes a great base for three days of vacation. My family did that when I was a kid, and my DH and I did it nearly 30 years later and we had a lot of fun.

I stayed in a hotel on Hwy30 that was 50 bucks for the night (we stayed there on two occasions) and we've done overnights to do:
Strasburg Railroad
Railroad museum
Christmas Village
Anderson Pretzel Factory
Hershey Park (at the very least, Chocolate world is there)
One Room School House
lunched at the Red Caboose (the hotel uses Train cars for rooms!)

There are tours that can be arranged by the Visitor's Center. I did it as a kid and it was great. We had an elderly Mennonite woman come and guide us around the area, and we went to several Amish farms, and the Anderson Pretzel Factory. You can also tour one of the potato chip factories and Wilbur chocolates.

I'd suggest getting in touch with the Lancaster visitor's center-they've got so much info, there's quite a bit more there that we never had time to do.

Enjoy your getaway. I'm looking for my own three day getaway (when DH is off at the same time) because the Keys are calling me, lol.

$60 seems low for a room, I live about 45 minutes away and even here that won't get you a room at the Hampton Inn. Here it would be a Red Roof, Super 8 or something (yucky, IMO) like that.

Ditto on Lancaster and Hershey too visit too. Gettysburg is about a one to two day at most visit. Of course I have grown up here and schools always take field trips there so I have been there a lot. So I may be biased.

Thanks for the info guys!

Poohnatic, thank you sooo much for all the info! I will definitely check out that area!

We've only ever spent the day as well. I do remember there are a lot of B&B's in the area. You may want to search that too.

I live about 40 miles from Gettysburg and I agree that Gettysburg is only a day trip. Here are 2 ideas that might help. Both are close enough to go to Gettysburg for the day. Lancaster is also a good place to stay to use as a base to go places. If you were planning on going to Hersey, the ride at Hersey Choc. World is closed for repairs until April. Have fun what ever you decide to do.

This is a B&B, I have never stayed there, but my mom used to love going there. Very relaxing she said.

Our friends just did this and had a blast. The Sunday brunch is said to be one of the best.

Both of those places look very nice. I'll have to check them out a little more after work! Thanks for the info!:teeth:

There is a Country Inn and Suites that is right next to an Outlet Mall in Gettysburg that is nice- it is a newer hotel and you can walk to the outlets.
Also if you like to Cycle Gettysburg would be a good place to ride bikes.
When we went we wished we had brought ours with us.

bumping as that is my spring trip destination for this year.

i do civil war sites and rev also. so excited and looking forward to this.

lots of ideas on places to stay.

Thanks Motherhen, I didn't know the chocolate ride was closed. My girls love that ride. I hope they update it alot! IT shows it's age. My neighbor helped put in the mirrors and all the glass years ago when they updated it last.

Nice to see another Yorker on the boards!
