Getting to Rum Point on Grand Cayman

This seems pretty trivial amidst all the hurricane devastation, but I need to ask...

Has anyone ever tried to get to Rum Point beach on their own? My DH and I are thinking about doing a two-hour morning snorkeling excursion to the Calli shipwreck, but the rest of the family will be doing the Rum Point beach day because they have small children. We were wondering if it would be possible to get to Rum Point on our own after our snorkeling trip? Or should we bag the snorkeling and join them for the beach day? Or maybe we should bag the family and go to 7-mile beach on our own after snorkeling?

This is our "maiden voyage" to these western ports, so all of your advice/input is very needed and welcome!

It is very easy to get to Seven Mile Beach from the Port. Taxi's are lined up at the Pier and go back and forth all day (the drive is about 10 minutes, depending on which part of the beach you get out on.) It is a little more challenging to get to Rum Point. I believe you take a taxi to the Hyatt. From the hotel, you take a ferry to Rum Point. It takes about 30-40 minutes from the pier. I've been to Seven Mile Beach several times and it is very nice. This trip, however, I am (was) planning to try Rum Point. If I get to go this week, I'll post and let you know IMHO whether it is worth the extra effort to get there.

This is what we did last jan 04. We rented the cheapest car from www.grandcaymancruiseexcursions.com. I think it was cico avis. Pickup a couple of blocks from the pier at the blue iguana. The avis office was about a 10 minute drive away from pier at the airport. We were last in line and oopsss...sold out of cheapest car so we got free upgrade to a jeep!!!

We left georgetown and drove the east side. We took the long way around, looked at the blowholes, the wreck of 10 sails, and ended up at Rum Point around 10:30am. We laid out/enjoyed the beach and then went on a stingray snorkel through www.redsailsports.com that we had booked in advance. Rum Point is only 15 minutes from the stingray sandbar, so their glass bottom boat took us out there in a jiffy, and we not only enjoyed that, but they also took us out to a reef afterwards. Saw some gorgeous fish and even an eel.

Got back around 1:15 and had some time for lunch (many outdoor grills right there) and a shower. Drove back to georgetown, shopped for rum cakes, bought hard rock t-shirts and some cuban cigars all in time to get back on ship by 4pm.

It was AWESOME!!! Don't miss Rum Point! It was secluded and not very busy at all. We'll be back in GC this jan and plan to do hell, turtle farm, 7 mile, cemetary beach, and sea grape beach.

Whatever you do, I'm sure it'll be fun!

We've rented a jeep on both of our trips to GC so we could spend the day at Rum Point. Not crowded, very relaxing, clean, good food and drinks, I love the mudslides, snorkeling is O.K. we've seen rays and small eels, and beautiful fish. The drive is a little long but worth it.

We've been to Hell, not much there. Two tiny old shoppes mostly selling postcards and junkie stuff. The post office is with the shoppes also a tiny old building. BTW, the folks there didn't go out of their way to be friendly.
