Getting to MK/avoiding Disney transportation

Is there any way to get to MK withOUT taking Disney mass transportation? Are the Minnie Vans permitted all the way up to the gate (vs the transporation center)? I suppose you could get to the Contemporary and then walk... ?

Thank you. Any recommendations if staying off site? Considering a split stay and moving to a Disney Springs hotel for the second leg. Have some bad memories associated with getting out of MK via ferry/ monorail from a previous trip
