Rather than booking a flight directly from Atlanta to destinations in Hawaii for big bucks we were thinking it would be less expensive to use our 2 free SW round trip tickets to fly to California then book a flight from there. Which airlines offer discount flights from California to Hawaii and what would be the best airport to fly out of?

beatofhawaii.com lists fabulous deals via twitter or facebook. You have to act quickly but do a little research there.

Alaska Airlines flies to Hawaii from California (go figure). They usually have some pretty good deals. I'm in Sacramento, and I just saw a deal from them for $189 each way from Sacramento to Maui. Wish I could go......

We are going to hawaii and thought of doing the same thing but honetly it wan't much, if any, cheaper. Plus, we have to get our bags from baggage claim then recheck them...not worth the hassle, IMO.

We are flying from BWI to ATL to HNO for $977 R/T.

I've seen cheap flights from Hawaiian Air. Clark Howard tracks travel deals from Atlanta too and has posted some awesome flight prices too.

San Francisco is usually the cheapest. Hawaiian and Delta usually have the best fares flying into Honolulu; I don't watch Maui flights though, so not sure about those, if that's where you're looking to go. LAX used to have comparable prices to SFO, but lately, they seem to be much higher. However, I've seen some reasonable prices on Hawaiian flying out of Seattle, so you may want to look there too....

It's funny how perceptions can be. We live half way between LAX and SFO and have traveled to Maui every year for almost 20 years. We have never flown out of SFO. Not only is it more prone to weather delays than LAX, it has always been more expensive when we have booked flights. We have flown from San Jose (although that was in 2002) and have seen sporadic deals out of Sacramento. Alaskan out of Oakland can also have good prices.

From Southern California, there can be good prices from San Diego and Orange County. Not in Southern California, but there can also be reasonable deals from Los Vegas.

There is an added inconvience when booking two separate flights. It probably works best if you plan to spend some time at your stopover point. Best of luck -- Suzanne

I don't know about the cheapest, but we usually fly out of San Francisco.

It's not going to be that much cheaper; and, on top of that, if there are any delays or cancelations on your Southwest flight, your screwed, because Southwest owes no responsibility to your for your Hawai'i flights on another carrier, and visa-versa.
